Found a land deed from 1786 Duplin (now Sampson) Co., N.C. that pertains to my Goodman, Whitfield and Barefield family. We have good reason to believe they are related to the Coharie Tribe. There are several Goodmans on Coharie rolls and some Whitfields. My Barefields moved on to GA.
The deed shows my distant grandfather, Solomon Barefield owned the land near Rattlesnake Branch in 1756. Rattlesnake Branch is just a few miles southwest of Clinton which is where the Coharie Tribe is located. It then passes back and forth in this same deed between several family members including Timothy Goodman and from Henry Goodman and wife Rachel. Also has Constantine Whitfield as owning part of the land in 1775.
Solomon Barefield’s wife was Margaret Whitfield who was the daughter of William Whitfield and Elizabeth Goodman.
I know they would never accept me as a member of their tribe for a couple of reasons: 1) rolls are closed while they are seeking Federal Recognition 2) I don’t have a family member on the 1900 census
We did find the one photo of Jonathan Goodman and says he is the son of Timothy. Does anybody know where I could find some photos of the Coharie online or is there any good books on their history available. Sure would like to talk to a person who is from the Coharie Tribe if possible.
I can make this land document available to anyone, just let me know and I will post it.

May 18, 2008 at 9:21 am #34452At the link below you will find postings by someone who’s ancestor was Ransom GOODMAN and the son of John GOODMAN and NANCY BREWINGTON. He said that Randsom GOODMAN also lived in Sampson NC and was COHARIE NATIVE AMERICAN. As of the posting, April 2009, he said he was in the process of getting citizenship.
