Scott mentioned that he hoped someone was putting together a book on Saponi history. This is the vision many of us have for this web site. The thinking is an open source complete history of ALL Saponi knowledge including family trees etc. We may do a book but an open source living and searchable web site is far more powerful. We are sick of the secrecy, closed doors, memberships, selfish political gain, etc. We have many people in this group and lots more that will join. We can duplicate the research that others do not want to share. There are many shoulders who are taking pieces of the load which will easy the burden on everyone. We will make this info open to all Saponi descendents and the world. There are others that have not begun to post on this forum with tremendous Saponi knowledge who have the same vision.
April 18, 2001 at 6:25 pm #5159Scott, you mentioned this book:
“I have been reading a book by James Mooney called The Southeastern Siouans.”
Is this book old and past the copy right date-70 years I think? If so we could transcribe it and put the full contents on our web site for all to read.
April 18, 2001 at 6:25 pm #5160Mecou, That so very wonderful. The last publishing date was 1970 I believe. I will have to look at it again. Free and open information and access is the key and I am glad to be apart of this forum. Bila huk, Cotton Top
April 18, 2001 at 6:25 pm #5161Mecou, I just ran over to get the book. It says republished 1970 by Scholarly Press.
April 18, 2001 at 6:25 pm #5162Since it is still under copyright, we can always quote stuff from it or write articles based on it.
April 18, 2001 at 6:25 pm #5163I don’t think because somebody re-published it means they have a copyright. I have a feeling this press likely ran out and re-published it BECAUSE the copyright had run out and it was open season on the book.
Mooney, I’m pretty sure is a very old classic source. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m picturing a very old, beat up volume on the University shelf about 90 years old. And that was not a first edition.
April 18, 2001 at 6:25 pm #5164Scott, the book should say whether or not it is a revised edition. Can you check?
April 18, 2001 at 6:25 pm #5165Mooney, James, 1861-1921. ECU library does not have the book you have. Anything of that you can transcribe is publishablee on-line.
