Occoneechee State Park sits right above the now-inundated island where our people, the Siouan of the VA/NC Piedmont, were defeated and destroyed politically and militarily. State parks have always allowed concessions to exist within the parks which could be justified as appropriate. With a faltering economy, ways are being sought to accelerate this kind of privatization, which we feel are readily very dangerous to the survival of the parks in their natural state. There is presently a proposal on the table to bulldoze 23 acres of 100-year old forest and install a 90-room conference center (hotel) a restaurant, gift shops, marina, etc.
We have prepared an online form, which when filled out, will be sent to the VA Dept of Conservation office. We would greatly appreciate it if you all would take a few moments to voice your opinions on this. You don’t have to be a citizen of Virginia for your voice to matter. If you are not a resident of Virginia, please add to your comment that you are a Virginia Siouan descendant and have a stake in the issue on that basis.

November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11504Linda,
I don’t know what good it will do from here, but I just filled out the DCR and submitted it. That is so totally and completely wrong. They need to go tear up someone elses yard! Love & Light, Lynella.;)
November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11539Linda, I made comments, but there sure doesn’t seem to be much feedback here. I hope that people will read your post and help to curtail any planned development of this area!

November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11540Linda, I went and posted my feelings as well…..this doesn’t look like a good thing for sure….as hard as we are working to keep the cemeteries here preserved….I can understand the problem. Hopefully, they will listen to those who send their opinions.

November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11549We just “do it”. It’s not important to be seen shaking our own rattle.

November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11557I posted my feedback too.
I’m sorry I’m not around much these days. Major changes in my life this September will keep me hopping for the next two years.
November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11558Hope your hopping doesn’t wear out your mocs. Be well.
November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11559We miss you Patty – hope everything turns out okay.

November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11590I would like to ask anyone who does make a comment to the government regarding this issue that, if you are from a state other than Virginia, you add a comment that you are a Virginia Siouan descendant if that is the case.
November 11, 2004 at 1:47 am #11598Linda,
That is a very good idea. Lynella.
