Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
hello everyone,
I’m new here, my last name is Cotton. But, because I have always grown up in North Carolina and both of my parents were born and grew up in places very near Hollister, NC; in fact, in the same county that Hollister is in. I had a niche that we could possibly have some Native American ancestors(specifically Haliwa Saponi). My mother is white and my father is black however, I didnt let that stop me thinking that they could both have native american lineage, because from what I’ve seen they’re is plenty of tribal members who may appear to be black or white if you didnt know anything about that (I don’t mean that in a negative way AT ALL) in fact, I think thats what the beauty is about native american descendents. However upon to some family on my dad’s side, they said they were not sure if their last name was really Cotton, that it was Richardson but got changed when my Great Great Grandfather (or however many great’s it is) was moved on the other side of the Roanoke River on a different slave plantation. If I continued my research and found other family lineage that lined up with the Haliwa Saponi, would my last name be an inhibitor from our family getting enrollment? Thanks again!
