I was just reading one of the post that talked about the Cross name as being a descendant of Pocohantas. Not sure if I have mentioned this before but I am named after my great great grandmother Cassandra Cross who married Ishmeal Hyman who I have found to be a Lynch but name changed to Hyman by William T. Hyman who had Tuscarora people working his farms. He changed all Natives names to Hyman. When I first started posting here I had no idea of the info I would find as the years went by. My gr gr grandmother Cassandra was a Medicine Woman. Her father was Samuel Cross and her mother was Harriett Cross. After many years now of doing family research and finding birth/death certificates I have learned so much more about my tribal connections. As I research I am finding that the Crosses in Martin Co NC probally came from VA and they did intermarry with the Tuscarora people in Martin and Bertie Co. It is very possible that I am also a descendant of Pocohontas if my Crosses were the same ones that came from VA to Martin Co. I also read on one of the post that the Martin name is also on the Cherokee roles. That struck me as odd because there are many Crosses and Martins in Martin Co. If anyone has any more info on the Crosses of Martin Co and the Cherokee connection please let me know. Grandma Cassandra came to my mother two weeks before I was born and told her she would have a girl and she MUST name me Cassandra. My mother had never seen my gr gr grandmother because she had been dead for many years before my mother was born. She had never seen any pictures of her either and when she told my grandfather about the visit and described her to him he said that was his mother. I have said many times on the forum that the info I find just falls in my lap….I am never looking for it when I find it….

July 5, 2009 at 11:49 pm #33949It would be interesting to find that you did have a link to Pocohontas, since all I’ve heard of so far when it comes to her descendants were families that had been enumerated as white for all the generations back (excepting her of course). The Rolfes having been wealthy gentry and all, that’s to be expected, though I’ve often wondered if there were branches of the family that kept with other mixed blooded people.
July 5, 2009 at 11:49 pm #33959I am descended from Pocahontas through the Bolling Family. My 5th GGMO was Francis “Fanny” Bolling b. VA who married John Bowles. I have the book, The Descendants of Pocahontas – I’ll look for the Cross name. Not all descendants are in that book, however, especially if they were not proven by the time that book was printed.
July 5, 2009 at 11:49 pm #33963Hi Linda,
I’m feeling so much better since my surgery. Thanks for asking. When I speak of descendants of Pocahontas I am talking about her father as well and all of her siblings. There were many “tribes” that were a part of the Powhatan Confederacy. I am speaking of the descendants of those people who may have not married anyone but an Indian who may have been from any of the tribes in VA. I think it better to say descendant of Powhatan and not just Pocahontas. As we all know the Cross or any other euro name was not who they were before their move from VA to NC or any other area……
If my Crosses are descendants then kudos to myself….smile….As the young folk say…”I ain’t made at that” 😀

In the book, Pocahontas’ Descendants there are 23 individuals by the name of Cross. There is no Cassandra, Samuel or Harriet Cross, however. That does not mean she is not a descendant – just that she may not have been documented, yet, to connect to this Cross Family prior to this book being published. My line was not prove and I had to prove my 4th ggmo, Nancy M. Bowles, whose mother was Francis “Fanny” Bolling descended from John and Mary Jefferson Bolling.
SIDENOTE: Something interesting!!! While I was writing this post, my brother called to tell me he had watched the Antique Road Show and saw a picture painted by a W. R. Leigh who descends from Pocahontas. The picture he painted was of two Indians in the west where he had traveled among the tribes. I told my brother I had the book out at that moment and looked up the Leigh name. There are four but only one male by Sir Thomas Leigh who is an ancestor of this painter, W. R. Leigh. Fun, huh!

AnonymousInactive😀 Coastal Carolina Indian center Database lists surnames for Bertie Co. NC.
Carteret, Craven, Bass Bible Record, etc.
On the Tuscarora Land Leases is a John Randle. 1777.
I descend from John Randle 1640. He had
John Randle 1678-1753 who married Mary Johns.
I researched that John had a brother Josias 16 years older born 1662,
died January 1703. I found a marriage 1702 with Jane Johns. I think she married Josias and there is a child mentioned by Josias ” in Esse” ( Essex) Co., VA ( Old Rappahannock).
I keep finding data that some Randolphs changed their name to Randle/Randall and Rand.
I saw a genealogy chart on descendents of the Rolfe/Bolling/Randolph line that had a son and daughter born deaf.
My Randle line also had children born deaf. John Randle and Mary Johns son, John, m. Frances Barrett and had ” Dumb John ” who married Mary Tabitha Lyon. They had a son John -born deaf. no issue.
They had a son James b. 1706 ( Surveyor of Bertie County, NC 1754/55), daughter Apphia, and a son Josias b. 1703 who it says married Jane Randolph. ( I also found a Jane Randolph m. Richard Cheek, Sr.)?
I have data that Peter Randle was John and Mary’s son and other data says Peter was the son of Josias and Jane Randolph.
Does anyone know anything about this Randle/Randolph connection and if John Randle ( Tuscarora) is possibly, John Randle b. 1640 ?
The Randle’s lived in Brunswick co., Nc /south side of Meherrin Rriver, Parish of St. Andrews.
