Hello all,
I was wanting to try and find out which Indian tribe the Deese Peple came from. My great grandmother was Martha Deese (1848-1933). Her father was William Deese (1825-1900) who married Margaret Ozinia (Zina) Parker(1835-1902). His father was Asa Deese(1797-1878) m. Priscilla(1798-1876). His father was Richard(1742-1815) m. Milly. All from Chesterfield County, South Carolina around Pageland, SC. Richard and Milly came down from Johnston County, North Carolina.
Zina Parker was from Union County, North Carolina. Her father was Elijah Parker m. Margaret Ann (Peggy) Jenkins. You can e-mail me at josiah402003@yahoo.com Thank You So Much, Don Reid

This is a very long shot, but…any relation to a Mary Jane Dees who md. a Qualls (Quarles)? They lived in Alabama. Their son Thomas filed the claim seen here:

January 15, 2008 at 8:42 pm #29389I am sure they came from the SC-NC area originally. There is alot found on if you google “Descendants of Andro Dees” . I am sure she will be found there. I did hear that they were Cherokee or Tuscarora. This is more proof than I have found so far.
BTW, on the document something is written to the side where it says Eastern Cherokees, Were you able to read that or not? Thank You very much for getting in touch, Don
January 15, 2008 at 8:42 pm #29391Hey Josiah,
Unsure what you are seeing that is hard to read. These are Eastern Cherokee claims. I probably should have posted the main page, which is here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~quarles/indianclaims.html
There are multiple pages for Thomas. Found it interesting that his mother (Mary Jane) appears to have had an Indian name. Wish it were easier to read!
Most (but not all) Quarles claims were denied, so it may only prove that they believed themselves to be Cherokee.
In the small world department, I happened upon this info awhile back while searching for my Bowlings. Milly Bowlin md. a Quarles, whose family also filed a claim. Milly was from Henry Co, VA, where a few Quarles and a Deweese or two also lived. (COunty where I am from) They left there around 1830 & went to Tenn, then Alabama. In their claim, Milly was the Cherokee. However, she may have actually been Saponi.
