to see his father.
So, If John D.’s mother is Deborah Cooke and she’s full-blood Cherokee, then either both John Cooke and his wife are Cherokee or maybe just his mother was. Does anyone know anything about this John Cooke and who his wife was?
Related surnames are: Tinsley, Ketchum, Carter, Rucker, Jackson,Hickman, Isbell, Christian, Martin, Woodson, Ford.

December 1, 2005 at 4:03 pm #20372My interest in John D. Chisholm was based on having found an 1802-03 survey of the route of the Natchez Trace “as formerly traveled,” passing by “Chisholm’s Camp” just south of present Waynesboro, TN. That was John D. Chisholm, when he was acting on occasion as an intermediary between the Chickasaws around Muscle Shoals, the Cherokee near present Florence AL, and the US and Tennessee governments.
I published an article about this survey in The Indian Historian magazine, vol. 8 no. 4, winter 1975. Much more recently I have tried (again) to get some folks in the TN state office of archaeology to take an interest in Chisholm’s Camp, as potentially an interesting site.
What I know about John D. Chisholm’s genealogy, upward or downward, I mostly got from Bill Breedlove, whose online posting of Chisholm genealogy (cited about five messages above this one) doesn’t entirely agree with yours. If (as Breedlove thinks) he was married three times, and his last two wives were partly Cherokee, it is not a stretch to think maybe his first wife was part Saponi. (This has been alluded to, barely, in a Harrelson thread on this forum — mostly by inference, and mostly by Bill Childs.) I’d be very surprised to learn that his mother was Cherokee. His son Ignatius married a Cherokee, I believe, from an important lineage. Jesse Chisholm of the Chisholm Trail had very strong Native American features — one assumes, from his mother, maternal grandfather and both grandmothers, and I don’t know about farther back.
Perhaps you need to pursue this with Bill Breedlove; I plead ignorance as to the reliability of your respective sources, etc.

Several descendents of William Chisholm and Deborah Cooke applied for membership to the Cherokee Nation. They were rejected but some were accepted into the Chickasaw Nation.
