There’s a wonderful miniseries going on right now. It starts in Pine Ridge with a journey of an old man and his wayward grandson to the Gathering of Nations pow wow in Alburquerque. On the way, the old man tells a number of stories from various tribe’s lore. The production values are awesome and the stories are even better.
Tune in tomorrow night, ABC at 9 pm EST. The grandson has just jumped off a cliff into the Rio Grande to save his enemies from drowning, while another young man in a tale is deep in a pond fighting a giant snake with arrows he got from an ugly old hag who turned into a beautiful girl when she hugged him. (Of course, once she got good looking she was hard to get.)
The smarmy red headed wannabe in the present was a Kiowa war captive in one of the stories, who makes a last stand against the army to help the village escape north.
I thought it was very well done. I hope that the trend will continue and we will see more coming out of hollywood of this quality and that of Skinwalker and Coyote Waits ..

I hope the ratings were really good and more productions like this are encouraged. American culture is constantly doing homages to English folklore (e.g. Harry Potter). It’s really exciting to see the lore that’s really FROM here being developed.
It’s great stuff for special effects. What I realized when watching this, is how the fantastic, magical elements in these stories look just as plausible as the English-derived stuff seems, once you actually see it.
Anybody else realize that the search engine spider “Inktomi” is named for the prankster in Lakota lore? Gary Farmer was a great Iktomi.
I really enjoyed the movie and hope more like this one keep coming out. The Indians are far too “type cast” and really American Indians need to be cast instead.
The storie tellers are not as plentiful as should be…they really know the REAL stories and only then can we be protrayed the way we should. I don’t look down on the “wannabe’s” nor most of my Native Friends because all they want is to know the REAL History and the Heritage…they want to learn the ways and real ways from the Natives..how else are they going to learn. I use to look down and was told I was a “wannabe” till I was able to prove my heritage…and still consider myself a “wannabe” because I am still learning..I will be with my creator when I quit learning..I still am learning of the whiteman…now HE is the one I DON’T understand nor ever will…Too complicated…Give me the simple ways!

Our people were many,silence was loud
and rivers full of fish, we traveled without fear
…we moved from north to south and east to west with weather
Exploring mother earth
cherishing her gifts of shelter and food.
The whiteman came and the thunder grew
fear ran rampid and so did tears
Death was daily. Life was not what we once, knew
The days they grew dark, our people they, starved
were told to MOVE…our bodies grew old too fast
We knew nothing of how the day would end or begin.
Diseases and death filled the air now
When will it end…only our creator knows true..
There’s an old joke about an undercover Game warden who went fishing with a suspected fish poacher. When the Game warden saw the man take a stick of dynamite from a sack and lit it, he informed the man that he couldn’t do that! The man handed the Game warden the lit stick of dynamite and said, “Are we going to talk or fish?”
Want to talk or fish? See how many people we can get to write a letter to ABC and thank them for showing “Dreamkeeper”. (I don’t think that emails are valued as much as U.S. mail) Ask that they include Native American news on the international news too. If anyone can find an address for Hallmark we could write them also. Thank them for producing “Dreamkeeper” and ask that they produce more Native American movies of the same quality. Hallmark also produced “The Lost Child” which was very good.

There’s another way of sending this message that networks NEVER ignore. Go out and buy the video when it comes out in Hallmark stores the middle of February.
I thoroughly enjoyed it…and plan to purchase the tape when it is in the stores. Most of the stories went right along with the book “Black Elk Speaks” that I was reading at the time.
I know the value that big corporations put on letters so I wrote ABC anyway. We should always do as much as we possibly can to promote a worthy cause.
