April 28, 2005 at 6:49 pm #14771Below is an excerpt from the Win Indians. For further information
Google: Estabrook Papers (papers on Carrie Buck, Eugenics and “Mongrel Virginia Indians”
Google: Plecker Duff (1924 Virginia Racial Integrity Law)
BTW there is no such tribe as the Win indians. Win stood for White Indian Negro, i.e. Tri-Racial indians….

Greetings cousin!
We have a match with Daniel Duff and Nancy Ann, although I have Nancy Ann’s last name listed as Ellis rather than Ellison. They are my GGGG-Grandparents.
I’m descended through their son John, b. 1801. I have no information on John & Nancy’s other children.
I’m also related to Lucinda Campbell, b. 1839, but I don’t know her spouse or children. My Lucinda’s parents were Hiram Campbell and Susan Eversole. Could be we’re related that way too, since my family tree is full of Campbell’s.
My Duff’s were from Perry County, KY, and prior to that from North Carolina.
April 28, 2005 at 6:49 pm #14777JT and Patty,
John Duff, b. 12 Jul 1836 Perry Co., Ky; d. 30 Dec 1910 Perry Co (son of Colson Duff and Elizabeth Gilbert);
m’d Lucinda CAMPBELL, b. 6 Jan 1846 Perry Co., Ky (but 1850 & 1860 census lists her with ages that would put her as b.abt. 1839), dau of Hiram Campbell, b. 15 Aug 1808 NC, d. 6 Mar 1891 Perry Co., Ky; and his wife Susanna EVERSOLE, b. 3 Oct 1812 NC, d. 27 Apr 1905 Perry Co. (On the 1850 Perry Co Census, there is a “Martha LAD”, 63, b.Va., living with Hiram and Susanna Campbell at visit 173. Colson, Elizabeth and son John Duff were visit 103.)
Hiram Campbell’s parents are John Campbell, b.abt. 1760 NC and Polly COUCH, b.abt. 1770 NC. ( The above info on 1850 & 1860 Perry Co Census and in World Family Tree, Vol 18, trees 336 & 337).
Numerous WFTs show Daniel Duff, b.abt. 1772-76, Guilford Co., NC, as a “Reverend” & most of the WFTs show his 1st wife as Nancy Ann ALLISON, d. 15 Aug 1849; after which he m’d 2nd Elizabeth ROE, nee: LITTLETON, in Carter Co., Ky on 16 Mar 1851, with Daniel Duff dying 15 Aug 1855 in Carter Co.
There were 3 Daniel Duffs in 1820 Ky: one each in Floyd, Clay and Montgomery. The Floyd Co Daniel Duff’s children in 1820 appear to match up best with the 1830 Perry Co Daniel’s children.
A couple of WFTs show Nancy Ann as an Ellison, but Ellison and Allison are pretty commonly interchangable spellings and it could be either one.
per WFT Vol 5, Tree 726, Daniel Duff’s parents are Shadrack Duff, b. 1748 Scotland, d. 15 Mar 1781; m’d per WFTs Vol 66, tree 501 and Vol 40, Tree 237: Deborah DIXON, b.abt. 1750. Tree 501 also shows Daniel with a sister Elizabeth, b.abt. 1774, who m’d Thomas McLEAN / McLain, a Baptist Minister, & moved to E. Tenn abt. 1803.
Several researchers are of the opinion that Shadrack’s father was James Duff who brought his family to Va from Banff, Scotland. You might want to go to Genforum’s Duff Family Forum and in the “search this forum” field, type in “shadrack” – there are about 18 msgs there discussing this Duff line – and see what evidence exists.
Colson Duff’s sister Drucilla m’d William GILBERT (WFT Vol 7, tree 4400).
Colson’s brother Shadrack m’d Lucinda COMBS (WFT Vol 5, tree 726).
Colson’s brother John A., b.abt. 1801 Lee Co., Va, d. 1892; m’d 16 Jan 1823 in Perry Co., Ky, Mary “Polly” COMBS (WFT Vol 5, tree 726 & WFT vol 15, tree 1858). The “Lee Co., Va.” reference may or may not be correct – I wasn’t able to confirm that. Tree 1858 also shows Nancy Ann as an ELLISON.

April 28, 2005 at 6:49 pm #14809I am interested in Shadrack Duff and his wife Deborah Dixon. What else is know about Deborah Dixon? Where did Shadrack and Deborah’s family live?
What I know about the origin of my “Dickson’s” was Jamed Wood married Nancy Dickson (b. @ 1780), and John Wood married Polly Dickson (b. 1773), @ the 1780s or 1790s. James and John were brothers and we assume Polly and Nancy were sisters. My Woods/Dickson’s were in Blount county, Tn near the Holston River from the late 1780s until they left for S Indiana @ 1806.
I don’t know where my Dickson’s were before that, but my Woods/Hammilton’s (parents of James and John) seem to have been around Wheeling, Ohio Co, Va (now W Va, during the Rev War years) and before that Rockbridge Co, Va., starting 1769 or 70. Before that Albemarle Co. Since Amherst Co was formed from Albemarle Co at some time after 1770, they might have been there — I really don’t know what part of the county they lived in.
Your Deborah Dixon b @ 1750 might be an aunt to my Dicksons, judging from the years separating them.
I’ve been told Dickson and Dixon are the same surname, and been told people had seen it spelled both ways on a single document.
I was told by another person that there were once Person County, NC “Dixon’s/Dicksons” who are Indian, but I can’t trace mine to any location before Blount Co., Tn., with certainty, and I havn’t seen any documentation of it, either.
