I’m new to this website and I wanted to post my family’s names. My maternal great grandparents are Sarah Gross and John Edgenton, both born in Rutherfordton, NC (the western part of the state, right at the edge of the Piedmont area).
Sarah Gross’s parents are: Elvira (indian servant, blackfoot, born approx. 1848); and Phillip Gross (white master, born approx. 1843).
John Edgenton’s parents are: Hettie (black slave, born in Jamaica, not sure of birth year but will look it up); and John Edgenton Sr. (indian, blackfoot, don’t know anything about him except that he died when John Edgenton Jr. was very young).
John and Sarah Edgenton married and had 16 tri-racial children. They are:
Leola, John Arthur, Spurgeon, Erastus, Roy, Pearl, Edna, Mattie, Will, Grace, Gladys, Juanita, and I can’t remember the other 4 names right now. Gladys was my grandmother and she just died on June 29, 2013 at 104 years old.
Many years ago, we were told by great uncle Spurgeon (lovingly called “Uncle Spudge”) that we were blackfoot. None of our elders really talked about it, and at the time, we didn’t think to ask a lot of questions about the blackfoot aspect of our lineage. Now that everyone’s passed on, we certainly wish that we had asked more questions.
I’m thrilled that this website exists and that there are others like me researching our blackfoot ties!
