For all of you that have been researching longer than I…which is all of you 😉 Who mostly likely would be the Free Persons of Color on records in the 1790’s in the counties of:
Mecklenburg County, Virginia
Brunswick County, Virginia
Person County, North Carolina
Would they most likely be NA, Black or Mixed? If they are NA, any particular groups recognizable in that area in that time period?
Also, is the name Chavous a variation on Chavis?
February 10, 2008 at 9:00 am #29781Most FPCs were ndn or mixed bloods. Freed slaves were discouraged from staying in Va and NC. Eventually it was required that when a slave was freed he had to leave the state within so many days or risk being re-enslaved.
Also, yes, Chavous is a variation of Chavis and the name is often ndn.
The ndns in the counties above in that timeframe were likely to have saponi or powhatan roots.
February 10, 2008 at 9:00 am #29782thank you much for the insight, my wall is missing a couple bricks now. The Chavous/Chavis name is now one for me to chase down on record for those counties.

If you’re able to go back further than 1790, your folks might be in a different county.
May not be relevant, but just in case…Some Chavis were in Patrick County, VA later (which was at one time part of Brunswick, etc.).
February 10, 2008 at 9:00 am #29786Can’t go back further just yet, but thanks for the heads up. I am hoping that this lead does pan out it would fill in lots of gaps.
I am sorry to be such a amateur and a pest to you lovely folks, but I have to be really zealous with my research. I want to be as accurate as possible though. My dad’s health is declining and I want us to take a trip in early summer to see some of these places, even if any trace of our family is long gone, I want to jog his memory a little bit and see if he has any buried family stories he had long forgotten.

To piggy-back on the link Greydove provided, this book shows Goins and Chavis…I believe under the Chavis name.
I also posted some links on History that had some Goins info. 🙂
