Looking for information on the family of Edward Cockram and Mary Polly Edwards or Preston or Evans or Isham. Mary’s last name is unclear. Family lore says she was Blackfoot Cherokee. Mary b unknowd and died after 1816 as she was listed in the will of her husband Edward Cockram. Edward lived on the lower waters of Shooting Creek where the creek enters Smith River. Their home was on the East slope of Renfro Ridge. His will was made 05/26/1816 and recorded in Franklin County.
Some source list Mary’s birth as 1750 in Halifax Co VA.
Looking at the descendants of Mary & Edward Cockram in some family trees it appears several lines are still in Halifax County today. Others are in Person and Caswell counties. There are limited family pictures, but the ones I have seen do appear to be of mixed ancestry – not that that is conclusive.
The Cherokee part I don’t know about – this is not traditional Cherokee territory. The Blackfoot (Saponi) part makes sense given the names, locations, dates, and pictures.
I doubt Cherokee also. Many times the “blackfoot” part is oldest and the assumption of Cherokee comes later.
