I’ve been looking at this pretty thoroughly. Edward Collins and Jane Jones have a daughter Mary married to John Landrum. Edward born 1729 is also about the same generation as Mary Collins born c1739. The will of Edward Collins lists a Mary Landrum. Something seems amiss. I’m still looking too. Saj
September 4, 2008 at 7:33 pm #32207Hey Saj, I have other family that is searching this line also and many of them have Mary Collins as Elnathan Davis’ wife. I have found references where she was his wife. But I’ve also found this:
1212 John COLLINS b @ 1710(4) or 1730 d 8 Dec
1793(3) Edgefield Co SC(3) m Ann COOK b Thomas
COOK moved to Augusta Co VA
12121 Edward COLLINS b 1729 Spotsylvania Co VA(6)
d Aug 1818 Orange Co VA m Jane JONES dau of
James JONES
12122 dau m Benjamin DAVIS
Elnathan’s father and his brother were named Benjamin. I have been trying to sort this out but it seems to just more confusing the more I find. I have seen where it was stated that Mary Collins was born in Maryland, North Carolina and also in Virginia. So I really am not sure where she was born at. I do know that Elanthan and a Mary Collins married in Orange County, N.C. abt 1757. I do believe that she is connected to the Orange County, N.C. Collins but I have been unable to determine who her parents were. Thanks for responiding Saj. If you come across anything please let me know. Whitehawk

I think it is a definite that Mary Collins was Elnathan’s wife. But Edward Collins in his will names his daughter Mary as Mary Landrum. That’s what I meant. Edward Jr. born about 1757 is executor of will and then guardian of Benjamin Davis’s children who is referred to as brother-in-law. Edward Collins SR. seems to be too close in age to Mary to be her father. The problem may be in multiple marriages and not naming all of the children but sometimes only of the last wife or current one? And how is Benjamin Davis a brother-in-law? Was Edward Jr married to a Davis?
1 NOTE Will of Edward Collins: Will was probated in court dated August24, 1818. Several retu
rns to Court regarding the estate wereheld until final settlement in August 1838. Value of estate was$5043 with $860 outstanding.
To my son John…To my son James. a Negro woman. to be equallydivided at his death between al l of his children by his secondwife ..To son Edward Collins’ children by his last wife …ToRichard T. Collins, Mordecai, Lewis D, daughter Mary Landrum, daughter Elizabeth Roberson…Belovid wife, Jane Collins, allthe balance of my estate…Appoint son Lewis D.Collins andfriends Thomas Ellis and
George Morris, to execute this my last will and testament..This2nd day of August, 1814. Signe d Edward Collins, Witnessed byCharles Flanagan, Mary Carter, and Ichabod Mallory.
Edward was the Executor of the will and Guardian to the childrenof his brother-in-law Benjami n Davis
? how is Benjamin his brother-in-law? Saj
September 4, 2008 at 7:33 pm #32211Saj, The only thing I can put together from the info you gave me and this info I found:
12121 Edward COLLINS b 1729 Spotsylvania Co VA(6)
d Aug 1818 Orange Co VA m Jane JONES dau of
James JONES
12122 dau m Benjamin DAVIS
Maybe Benjamin Sr was a widow and he remarried the Daughter of Edward Collins and Jane Jones. But I don’t think that would of been the case because Benjamin Sr died in 1759 and Edward Jr would have only been two years old. The only other thing I can think of is maybe Benjamin Sr’s son Benjamin Jr. married the daughter of Edward Collins and Jane Jones. Benjamin Jr would have been the right age to have done this. Benjamin Jr was born abt 1737. I don’t know what the name of this daughter would have been though. I still don’t know where Elnathan’s Mary Collins came from or the names of her parents. Thanks Saj for the info. I’ll have to keep looking and I’ll pass the info on about Edward Collins Jr being named the guardian of Benjamin Davis’ children to another family member that is also researching this and maybe we can tie some of this together.
