Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Hi. I was wondering if anyone was connected or know more about these families. My ggrandparents lived in this area around the late 1800 and early 1900s. The surnames that I have seen on the 1870 federal census are Jeffries,Davis,Harris,Jones,Banks,Evans,Griggs,Clements,Farleys,Griffins. I know there were few other surmames but these are the ones that stuck out the most. This area was also located near what was called the”7 Islands” and was part of the trading path. I have seen some of these surnames in some Indian communities. The families were mostly listed a black or mullato. I haven’t been able to pull up the whole census.
