Hi my name is Linda and my family is from the Edgecombe, Nash county areas of North Carolina. According to family history my great grandmother Nancy Moore was full blooded Siouan of which particular tribe I do not know. Her parents were John Moore and Mary Etheridge. We are unable get documented information on either John Moore or Mary etheridge. It’s like they didn’t exist until there children were born. I am hoping someone out there can help me. Thanks
June 1, 2005 at 3:35 am #15055Welcome to the Forum.
If you would post some time/dates/locations for John Moore and Mary Etheridge or their children and their names AND what you know about them, maybe someone here can help you with your search.
A name with which to address you, is also encouraged.

June 1, 2005 at 3:35 am #15056As I said my name is Linda:) my great grandmother Nancy Moore is the only child of John Moore and Mary Etheridge that I know of since i can’t get information on them. My grandmother was Katie Pridgen and was born in Nash County North Carolina in 1902. They lived near Blount Creek NC. My grandmother said her mother Nancy Moore was Siouan.

From American Civil War database index:
Thomas Ethridge, age 34, Wilson Co., NC., enlisted 18 April 1862 in Company C, 43rd NC Infantry Regiment, C.S.A.
Wounded 19 October 1864 at Cedar Creek, Va.
Died of his wounds on 4 Nov. 1864, Wilson Co., NC.
Thomas Ethridge, b. 1828, is claimed to be the son of Thomas Ethridge, b.abt. 1790 NC, and his wife Rebecca (surname unknown), b.abt. 1803 NC, living in Edgecombe Co in 1850, and that may be true but I couldn’t find any definite proof of that.
I could not definitely pin any parents to John W. Moore either.
A Donna Amerson post on genforum.com in 1998 says John W. Moore is buried on a local farm near her in Wilson Co., NC, with the dates:
B. 9/5/1828….D. 10/23/1901.
Her email at that time was gopirates@simflex.com
A Wendy Ridings’ post on genforum.com in 1999 says she has a picture of her G-Grandmother Mary Susan Etheridge, b.abt. 1848, dau of Thomas Etheridge, and says it is “VERY clear” that she is Indian.

H ave also seen our family picures and my sister is correct in her satement plus the fact my grandmother told me….the problem is just tracing them. We are of the belief John Moore is also part Indian. Basically I am just looking for that link that makes our history complete.

June 1, 2005 at 3:35 am #15069Linda,
Wendy thought (per a post) Thomas, b.1828, was the son of Thomas, b.1790, lived in Edgecombe in 1850.
Would you ask her what led her to that conclusion, other than the geography?
“John W. Moore” may have a solution, don’t know for certain yet.
Note: Wilson County was created in 1855 from parts of Edgecombe, Nash, Johnston & Wayne. Someone may have to dig around in one of those counties’ courthouses.

Sure I’ll ask her next time her phone isn’t busy LOL she breeds and sales champion poodles she’s always on the phone….she lives in east Texas these days since her husband begged her to leave North Carolina 🙂 I moved to south Alabama and last year married a man who is decsended from the Blackfoot in Missouri and possibly the Creek here in Florida and Alabama. And so this generation goes LOL and as far as digging in courthouses I guess that would be a working vacation. I do thank you for your help.

Wendy said she never was able to prove that Thomas Ethridge belonged to our Thomas Etheridge. I have doubts that he did and she was never able to get any info on his wife either. Don’t even know her maiden name.

June 1, 2005 at 3:35 am #18259Bill,
here with the Etheridges again LOL I’ve learned alot since we started this as it turned out Thomas and Rebecca were not Thomas’s parents his father is Jordon or Joaurdan Etheridge. thomas and Rebecca Etheridge turned out to be the parents of Louvina or Lurana whichever same person. Thomas and Louvina were distant cousins. My great grandmother’s name was Nancy Louvina Moore Pridgen. John W Moore’s parents turned out to be Joab and Martha Price Moore. Joab Moore was a lawyer. His parents were Theophilus Moore Sr. and Milly Robbins. Theophilus parents were Elijah Moore and Mary Sessums ( Mary goes back to Richard Smith and his wife Margaret(Nottoway). Elijah parents were James Moore and Ann Ruffin. (this line heads to the Branch family also Nottoway). My father’s family also married into the Branch family. We still do not know who Rebecca was, she however Louvina’s mother. I have been thinking of doing a mtDNA test because I carry Rebecca’s DNA through my mother Willie, grandmother Katie, ggrandmother Nancy, Mary Susan, Louvina and Rebecca. It might help figure out who Rebecca was…this I know to be a fact my grandmother had to much native in her for it just have been the few drops of Nottoway blood we carry. She was a Pridgen, the Pridgen’s have light hair but she had jet black hair and dark skin just like her mother. She was a beautiful woman. Mary Susan had a sister named Martha she married a Webb and they married into the Varnell’s anyway it is this branch that swears it is Cherokee and it comes from Rebecca…given that and my continued doubts I think the mtDNA could be effective in helping us since they can match you with people with the same mtDNA. This way it is possible we can find out more about Rebecca. If it turns out we match someone from the Cherokee Nation I’m going to me eating alot of crow Bill.
