I know this is a really old post, but I wanted to comment because I’m pretty sure that John Coleman was the brother of my great-great-grandmother Kittie Coleman (or possibly her name was Emma/Erma, and “Kittie” a nickname??). At least that’s what the census records indicate. While I haven’t found a census record that shows them both in the same household, my great-grandfather Marcellus lived next door to John and Ellen Coleman on one side, and John’s sister Kittie on the other (and her other brother? Nick on the other side of John (so it went Kittie, Marcellus, John, Nick).
Anyway, if my research is accurate, then John’s death certificate gives the names and birthplaces of his parents… Willis Coleman and Sallie Gundy from Brunswick County, VA.
P.S. I was replying to nativelady’s post about her family John Coleman and Ellen Rice (Coleman). I also have Lacks, Pleasants, Collins, and Coleman in my family tree besides this very strong evidence for direct connection… Is nativelady still on the forum?
