Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
In doing my research I’ve been trying to create a list of well-known people to help map inter-relatedness.
People I have used so far are; Micajah Bunch, David Collins b.1750, Isiah ‘Cuppy’ Collins. (well-known within Saponi descendant circles anyway)
I’m trying to identify other people from the past who are known to be Saponi or from a confederated tribe to trace their descendants.
Also looking for well-known people today or in recent history who claim or suspect Saponi ancestry, like Carrie Buck.
So far this is what I have (if anyone knows of others, or can prove/disprove ancestry please let me know)
Marvelous Marvin Hagler – former IBA middleweight champion – b 5/23/1951 NJ
(one genealogy source claims he is a descendant of Nopkehee/Nopkehe AKA King Hagler/Haigler, Oroloswa, Arataswa. Born abt 1700 SC – 1763. Catawba Chief)
Link Wray – rock musician best known for 1958 hit ‘Rumble’ – b 5/2/1929 Dunn, NC
(claimed half-Shawnee ancestry)
Earle Hyman – actor best known for playing Russell Huxtable on the Cosby Show – b 10/11/1926 Rocky Mount NC
Ned Bearskin – guide to William Byrd in Saponi territory in 1728
Robert Mitchum, the actor (Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison) said he was Blackfoot.
