You sure were thorough here. I will add to it as time goes on. I find the LESTER marriage interesting. There was a group of Lesters in Wyoming and McDowell Counties, WV that filed applications to Guion Miller. No doubt many of these were rejected as were the Sizemore applications. I think the applications are a good indication of a tradition of Indian ancestry in these families although most of them probably were not descendants of Cherokees who signed the Treaty Of New Echota. There appear to be a few Farley applications from the area, too, but I don’t recognize any of the names in the index. These applications probably contain a fair amount of genealogical information on the early settlers of this area. Wish I could find abstracts or transcriptions with out having to pay for them one packet at a time — could get pretty expensive.
Another reason that I am interested in Farley beyond a sneaking suspicion that there is Indian in the line somewhere is that they came into the area about the time my DAVID MOUNTS came and from about the same area in Montgomery where he first shows up on paper. There is a fair amount of folk who say they have Indian ancestery whose families were around the New River area, as well. Hugh Caperton “New River Hugh” was an Indian trader in that area I gather from a few things I have seen. Descendants of James Addair [David’s guaurdian/surety] have a tradition of Cherokee ancestors, but they are unsure if it comes from the Addair or Kirby line….
Your information does seem to comfirm that the Farleys that came over to Logan County were indeed seated in Montgomery County Virignia for a spell.
I checked out Farley grantees at the Library of Viginia and found, among many, many Farley grants, the following:
“Title Farler, Thomas.
Publication 14 September 1715.
Other Format Available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41.
Related See also the following surname(s): Farler.
Note Location: Montgomery County.
Description: 40 acres on a Big Spring Branch the waters of Big Walkers Creek and the waters of New River.
Source: Land Office Grants R, 1785, p. 301 (Reel 58).
Part of the index to the recorded copies of patents for land issued by the Secretary of the Colony serving as the colonial Land Office. The collection is housed in the Archives at the Library of Virginia. “
I need to double check Keagly, but I believe there was a Loyal Land Grant for a Mounts along Walkers Creek.
Thanks a bunch,
Brenda
PS. Does anyone know of an economical way to get genealogical info. from the Guion Miller applications? I really can’t order dozens off the bat! Also, is there an index of Guion Miller not by SURNAME, but by LOCATION of RESIDENCE & BIRTH????
January 26, 2006 at 6:23 pm #18901Montgomery Co was created in 1777 from Fincastle Co:
From “Annals of Southwest Virginia” by Summers:
“At a Court continued and held for Fincastle County May the fourth, one thousand seven hundred and seventy three…..
…On the petition of a number of Inhabitants It is ordered that William Thompson, ABSOLOM MOUNTS and William Lockart who being first sworn do view the nighest and best way from the foot of the Mountain by Joseph Cloyds to William Lockart on WALKERS CREEK and make a report of the conveniences and inconveniences thereof to the Next Court. “
This tells us one was in that vicinity.
January 26, 2006 at 6:23 pm #18942Absalom Mounts and James Addair – David’s guardian/surety in 1809 – were in the same unit together during Lord Dunmore’s War in 1774 as well.

January 26, 2006 at 6:23 pm #28546Hi, Brenda!
I don’t know if this has already been settled, but I am a descendent of James Addair of Montgomery County, Virginia, but not of the Kirby branch, and my family also has the tradition of Cherokee ancestors.
My line is through James Addair Sr. and his second, unknown wife. His son is John Addair about whom I know very little, then John Addair born around 1814, who married Lucinda Kirk in 1839 in Lawrence Co, Kentucky and then later married Elizabeth Payne in Tazewell Co., Va. He died in 1890, and is buried in McDowell County. Elizabeth Payne was my grandmother’s grandmother, and told her about the Cherokee in the family. According to her, her husband, 1814 John, was 1/8 Cherokee. If the Cherokee comes from the Addairs, rather than the unknown wives of James Sr., and the older John, that would make James Addair Sr. 1/2 Cherokee.
Last month I met (online) a descendant of 1814 John and his first wife, Lucinda Kirk, who also has the family tradition of Indian descent.
The Addairs have always been a brick wall for my family – one that we especially wanted to crack because of the Indian connection – but we could never get beyond 1814 John until I found the James Addair, Jr. Pulaski County estate settlement that James Trabue posted online. James Jr. dying without a will was a huge pain for everyone involved then, but it sure made tracing the family tree a lot easier for us!
