Bill, I hope you can help me with this. First, I have to start by telling you what my father said his Grandma Celia Baldwin Shortridge told him; her mother was Cherokee, adopted, and at one point sent to Ardmore, OK. This has confused me for some time, because of what I have learned of the Gibson family etc. I am attaching the link for marriage records of Buchanan County, VA., where my Ibby nee Gibson is listed as Ibbey Brooks. I am confused!! I know it is her as she married Jamed H. Baldwin, his parents John F. and Celia are listed, as is John and Hulda Gibson. Any suggestions? I feel as if I am starting over…

May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #21483Ibby was born in 1875 and married 1893, which would make her 18. It seems unlikely she could have been married before.
May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #21484Bill,
I have to add one more confusing factor, if you look below under Brooks, there is an Isabelle R.V. Gibson married to William Brooks. Well, hang on, I was told Ibby full name was Ibby Rosina Virginia Baldwin?? This is getting more confusing all the time.
May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #21489In the comments section for James Baldwin and Ibby, is a notation which would not make any sense for either of the sets of parents and due to the wording, may be different on the actual record.
….and look who Isabelle R.V. Gibson’s parents are on the 1892 marr. to Brooks.
May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #21495So do you think it is a mistake? I see that Isabelle R.V.’s parents are John and Hilda Gibson and Ibby Brook’s parents are John and Hulda Gibson. I will have to see what I can find when I go in July.

May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #21497Sorry bill, I can be slow to pick up on this info sometimes. It looks as if Ibbey/Ibby/Isabelle had a very short marriage to William Brooks. I have heard so many things about the family, It is sometimes hard to distinguish fact from stories. Well, onward we go. Thanks Bill for your time and patience.

May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #21514Accepted at face value, she was married twice but this is an index so it’s better to check the original record.
May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #21539Thanks Bill, I will check it out.

It looks like we may be distant cousins. These are my Shortridge great great grandparents from the marriage link above:
Shortridge, Benjamin T. Rowe, Elizabeth 8/23/1858 Shortridge, Robert Shortridge, Ruth; Rowe, Stephen
I would like to find a marriage record for Benjamin F. Shortridge’s daughter Laura, b. abt. 1878 who married Thomas Moore abt. 1907. I think she may have been married to a Jacob Shortridge previously as they are on the 1900 census with kids I know to be my gramdma Belle Moore Steele’s half sibs. Belle was an only child of Laura Shortridge & Thomas Moore. After combing the census records at Ancestry I have found them- difficult due to Ancestry.com errors- for most of the relevant years, but I am stimied on death records & marriage reocrds for Tom & Laura although I have found their graves.
PS Benjamin F. was murdered by ax in a robbery, infamous Buchanan County, Grundy area story.

It is always exciting to find family. I am not sure of my shortridge line, except that they were from the Grundy area and were moonshiners, though that seems to be a common M.O. I have searched census records for my GGrandfather Jonah’s parents, but have come up with nil. J.W. and Celia had 13 children; my grandmother was Maria Flossy Shortridge. Does any of this sound familiar? Celia’s father was James Harve Baldwin, her mother Isabelle Rosina Virginia Gibson. Any information you have and would be willing to share I would appreciate. Looks like the family lived in the Grundy area for about 50 years? I will check ansestry too, and see if I can find anything.

May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #22708Here are photos of J.W. and Celia (Ceila) Baldwin Shortridge. My father said Celia looked full-blooded, hard to tell from a B&W photo. The child was their oldest Delbert.

May 26, 2006 at 1:39 am #22734Bill,
Thanks, I was concentrating on Virginia and W. Virginia when searching, I should have thought to search KY. Looks like James was married a few times, though it looks as if Sarah was Jonah’s mother. Another one form Pike County…Thanks again Bill.
