Wow, Shirley. No kidding! Is he a known relative?
February 27, 2008 at 11:40 pm #29978Hey Bee,
Well if this is his tree, then we are most likely tied through cousinry (sp?) on both sides.
William Crawford Gibson b. 1892 Clairborn, TN
His father Rush Gibson b. 1850
His father Jesse Gibson b. 1795 NC m. Tanzie Collins
Jesse’s f: Jordan Gibson
Tanzie’s f: Vardeman Collins m. Peggy Gibson
When I first saw this picture…I just couldn’t believe the family resemblence.

Hi Melungeon,
Seems when the Collins and Gibson’s left Ashe, NC they went into Tennessee, Valerdy Collins and his group stayed on there, while Valentine and his went on to Pike/Floyd KY; I have no doubt of my connections to this group. Richard Allen Carlson’s dissertation has my Martin Gibson with Valentine “Tiny ” Collins group. Martin’s sister Dicey is said to have been Valentine’s wife.
I have gotten in touch with the owner of the photo, seems our Hackney’s may be linked as well. I am excited for this new lead:)

I do not the exact relation, but if ever I get all my notes together in one place (in other words…organized) it will be glorious day!
Thanks I have read the links…have suspected portuguese ties, but the family has always been adament of their NA roots. I suppose De Soto’s men would have take NA wives?? I am still working through it all, but I think the melungeon Collins Gibsons, the brass ankle Gibson’s, the carmel Collins Gibson’s are of the same family.:)
February 27, 2008 at 11:40 pm #30004yes, I am glad to see you read Richard Carlsons dissertation I think he puts alot of the background together as you siad for these various groups, and you have to agree even as far as the Carmel Indians the Collins and Gibsons and Perkins were common names. Each family as they moved of course added different threads but the beginnings of all these people are the remnant tribes of the Virginia/NC area. My Minors and Goins you find in all the various groups so I know what you are saying. It always makes them fun to research LOL:D
