Hi everyone,
I’m not sure if this information will help anyone, but wanted to put it on the forum in case there is some connection to be made.
My grandfather was William Gibson (born 3-30-1903 in Huntington,
Cabell County, WV; died 7-18-1981 in Indiana and is buried in
Neapolis, Lucas County, Ohio). He went by “Bill” and was married to Helen (b. Dec. 4, 1904 in Ohio and d. Oct. 12, 1972 in Bowling Green, Wood Co., OH. She is also buried in Neapolis, Lucas County, Ohio).
William “Bill” Gibson’s father is tricky. We have him listed as John
V. Gibson or James Gibson. John and James are both used in the divorce
records I’ve found for John/James and his second (or third) wife (my
great-grandma) Cora Scarberry Fox.
John/James and Cora were married on April 23, 1901. She was divorced
from a James T. Fox and John/James was widowed. John/James had been
married to a Marilla Martin who died in 1888 and her stone lists her
as the wife of John Gibson and cemetery records at Spring Hill in
Huntington, Cabell Co, WV where she is buried lists a James Gibson (no
headstone) as being buried next to her. From what I gather, John/James
Gibson was born around 1850 in Pike County, KY. That is what his
marriage record to Cora and Marilla say. Pike Co, KY is also listed as
John/James’ birth place on William “Bill” Gibson’s (his son) birth
record. I’m sorry…I know this might get confusing.
I believe, but haven’t proven, that John/James Gibson was the son of
William Gibson (b. around 1815) and Hannah Mohawk (my father< John
Robert Gibson 1941-2005> who was named for his grandfather was always saying he was 1/8 Mohawk.) I have found William and Hannah’s family in Russell Co., VA; Wayne Co,
WV, Pike Co., KY and Floyd Co, KY.
I am having a very hard time getting this family line traced because
William and Hannah had a son named John who isn’t my great-
grandfather.
They had several children, but there are at least 2 Johns and a James.
I don’t know how to figure out who is my John/James!
I’m sorry if that’s hard to follow!:o Everyone seems to be named John or William!
