My is past is from the Appalacian mountains. Wise co Va in paticular. For years we have been called Melungeon.I have strong indian lines with Blevins,Hart,Sizemore,Gilliam,Rose and many others.Yet as we all know we have been federally dismissed as an indians. There is no doubt that these people are a tribe of there own. From their own religion, music, stories and the many years of research on these people.
I recently received a letter that states our people of that heretige are being called
a new name. That is Appalacian Americans. This might not qualify as an indian tribe,
though indian blood does runs through these one of a kind people.I my self am proud to have this new name.I do hope that someday they will get the recognition of all they do deserve not only as Indian, but Black and White,Scottish,Irish and only God knows what other blood runs through those hills. I personally do consider my self as much indian as the next, no matter my blood quantum, where I was raised or even how.I beleive indian is not just in the degree of blood but it is in the persons soul.
July 22, 2007 at 8:45 pm #27560Jewell, I am very interested in your linking the Gilliam line to Red blood. My m-grandmother was a Gilliam. Also more and more interested in the Blevins connections to Sizemore – I tried to run this down once and didn’t feel I could connect my personal line … but am admittedly a little lost in the early 1800’s.
Thanks. – and I like the AA thing – this time meaning Appalachian Americans – but I’m not sure I get their reasoning.
July 22, 2007 at 8:45 pm #27561Hi friend or family? I dont have much on the Gilliam Line. But I have a bit on Blevins and Sizemore.i don’t have dates and everything with me at the moment But
my ggrandmother Was Rosa C Blevins of Ashe Co Nc.Her ggrandfather was Washington Hart son of James Hart and Catherine Sizemore. From there it goes back to Ned Sizemore and Cheif Bear Hart aka: William Jackson. If you see anything you are interested in Let me know. I will gather up dates and anything else I have.I also Have copies of Indian applications for a few of the Blevins Also after years of being treated less than white and less than indian not as good as any single race Having a name that does not have such a negetive meaning is really a major step up.

You are family to me whether we share genes or not. That’s how this planet is supposed to work. Howdy Cousin!
I don’t know which name brought you grief – but that is how this planet actually does work – too bad.
I don’t recognize your Hart family or your Rosa Blevins. My great-gramma was Minnie Blevins and I lose her line long before I get to Ned. Everybody wants to show one of her ancestor’s (Elisha’s father) as one name or another – but in my look at census data, I have to put him with someone else and it doesn’t connect to the Sizemore line … but I don’t know if I’m right or wrong … yet. Someday.
Shucks, Cuz. I was raised a white-boy with the last name Coon in Columbus Ohio in the 50’s and 60’s. Whatchu talkin’ bout negativity? I changed it to Cote in 81. I was born a Rice – and that’s really the closest thing to what I am for now. 🙂
Thank you for your response on this item.

July 22, 2007 at 8:45 pm #27566In Franklin County, NC I have a fair number of intermarriages between my own Collinses and various Gilliams. They are also intermarried with Richardson, Vinson, and Bass. Of these, none are certainly native, but Bass and Richardson, in the same general geographical area, are major names among the Nansemond and Haliwa-Saponi. Nothing solid here from me, just another interesting link of names. My Gilliams were around the Sandy Creek area in Franklin County, NC. Some outdated notes are available here: http://tamandmichael.com/COLHIST5.htm#The%20Sandy%20Creek
July 22, 2007 at 8:45 pm #27587I was taking a look at your notes Michael – but didn’t see any obvious connections to my Gilliam/Gillum line as all of mine stayed pretty much in VA until moving near Isonville, KY – the line apparently originating in county Kent, England (Gravesend).
It always strikes me strange though when I hear my family legends – it’s a “Self” who mrrd my ggrandpa Howard G. who is so legendary … but I find Howard (b. 1847) ,,, Howard’s dad Isiah – who I have a pic of – who has high-cheekbones and this raises even more questions. I also have an aunt that married a Gillum – lives in Boyd Co., KY – but I’ve never investigated his line … never met either one of them … yet. Thanks for sharing the info Michael.
