Hi everyone!!!
Having little free time lately until this weekend, and finally having time to search more, I am finding more connections to hopefully people here on the forum and NA ancestors. In searching the Hunt surname I am finding a lot of people on censuses listed as mulatto or black even, from the 1880 censuses. Earlier they don’t say… but the name Memucan is not common and I now have found Memucan Hunt listed as Black, although I believe it is of native american mix… Memucan Hunt born in 1729 also had a grandson Memucan Hunt born in 1808 who was born in grandville co nc but goes on to Texas and ends up in Tennessee. All of the names I am finding of Memucan as in Memucan Hunt Howard or Memucan Hunt Green or Memucan Hunt allen are related…all of the younger are grandson or nephews to Memucan Hunt Sr. born 1729 in Lunenburg co va and memucan Hunt Sr. was a brother to my Sarah Hunt who married Joseph Allen.
Memucan hunt born 1729 married mary Wade and they had several children. One, Jane Hunt married Barnette Howard and one of their sons is memucan hunt howard. B Dec 4 1798 in Granville co nc. Another son of memucan Hunt and Mary Wade is Thomas G who married Betty or Elizabuth Duke. Their children…Mary Hunt married Richard Bullock and sond John F hunt married Frances Bullock.. James anderson Hunt married Anna Adair Bridges in Mercer Co ky and they ended up in Caldwell, burleson, Texas. Other children, Albert galatin Hunt and Salina Hunt..etc.
Father of Barnette Howard was Groves Howard…Groves howard married Hannah Allen another relative on the allen side…all of these persons are interconnected. the memucan Hunt born in 1808 married Anna Howard…another daughter of Memucan and mary Wade, Sarah married in 1782 to Anderson smith.
does any of this ring bells? sorry I am typing a book now.
I am so excited…Somebody out there have anything to say about any of these people???
All born in granville mainly…
🙂 thanks for reading this if you do…!!! sueJ
June 28, 2004 at 1:20 am #10017I am interested in Howard’s and Allen’s. We might be descended from both but we are not sure. grandpa was Noah Allen Hawkins (1874-1952), and great grandpa was Joshua Allen Hawkins (1837-1892), so there might be the “Allen surname” associated with my Hawkinses — we are not sure. NC, Al, Tx, IT (Ok)
Howard surnames pops up in an association with 2 of my surnames, Wayland. (SW Va) and Gist (Va/Md?, Tn, Al, Ar, IT, Ok) But we are not sure if we are descended from them or not.
I’ll find out more if I subscribe to http://www.ancestry.com again, but they were expensive.

June 28, 2004 at 1:20 am #35373It does not look like this is a well traveled site so I hope the interested parties see this. Memucan Hunt Howard wrote a History of the Hunt Howard Families detailing all the marriages and progeny. I have a copy of the book or most of it. There is one in the Family History Library in Granville Co., N.C. There may be others. When I have time and if there is a response to this, I’ll post some of the details. My email address is also available.
I am descended from Groves Howard through his daughter Nancy on my mothers side and from Mark Howard on my fathers side. So yes, there were a lot of interconnections. Memucan Howard also wrote an account of his surveying experiences. It may be read at
American historical magazine and Tennessee Historical …, Volume 7, Issue 2
By Peabody normal college, Nashville, Tennessee Historical Society on line at Google Books. I’ll check the board again soon, since I am also interested in the Hunt/Howard family
