Greetings all = I’m new here . I’m Sarah , from Paradise CA . I’ve been researching William Bates of Wythe VA ( b 1737 ) , and licenced to trade with the Cherokee in 1750 by South Carolina lists . I’ve found most of his decendants , and there are multiple ties to the native community that I’ve pieced together . I’m hoping to both help this effort /and also find brickwall bits , LOL , but I’m excited to join you all here .
Williams children spread out to first KY as part of the early settlers movements , William lived most of his life at 7 mile ford VA , he was a part of the early spread out following the battle of the regulators , to KY ( Bullitburg -Boone settlement ) , his decendants moving to North Carolina , Tenneesse , Georgia =and were intermarried with natives along their migration several times I’ve found . I’m seeking more understanding of this family with the Owl family in Wythe VA , the Owl =Helton family in Hanging Dog NC , and the Owl – Helton family in Fannin GA for example , there are several other native family ties I’ll try keywording here , LOL – I’m just excited to be in touch with you all , so started this note without thought or real prep . It’s also clear the Wright family in Clay Co co – said to have native ties is a part of this Bates clan too -“Bad John Wright ” was son of the traders line , – I believe Bloody Bill Bates ( out with Draging Canoe in some skirmish events ) was a part of this Bates line , Bloody Bill Cunningham seems tied too -but I havn’t got proof yet. One aspect of the traders family that jumps at me is – they were clearly involved with the native community in many ways , and given traders were expected to marry a native wife , I’m seeking decendants who many not be among his “white ” family ( he married later in adulthood for the times to Margaret Young – daughter of Robert Young “owner of sweet lips ” /- both William Bates and Robert Young fought at Kings Mt as overton men . So – please write me if any of this strikes a bell , or you think I may be able to help your quest too !
