I got there a little after 12:00 PM.Grand entry had already started.
I was surprised at the number of people in the stadium!Looked like at least
500,perhaps even 1,000+
I was put off by the rudeness of the general public.Youngsters with “wheelies” (wheel-heeled shoes) were skating on the 2nd floor,pictures were being taken during the invocation and flag song,one kid behind me was kicking the back of my seat,and I saw someone touch a male dancer’s bustle (is that the right word ?) without permission.
On the plus side,there were booths manned by members of the 8 hosting tribes.Of course,I stopped by the Mattaponi and Upper Mattaponi booths as well as the Rappahannock,Chickahominy-Eastern,Pamunkey,and Nansemond.Didn’t get to the Monacan,unfortunately.The representatives were friendly enough and I learned a lot.
Didn’t get to hear any of the lectures on the 1st floor.I regret not seeing
the sign talker at 4PM,but I wanted to get back home before dark.Nor did I
get to check out the vendors on the 1st floor.
Although there was no cover charge,security was tight.
I won’t be going back next year because of the distance.(3 hr drive) Should they hold this next year,I hope there’s a cover charge;maybe then the
public might act a little better.

Say Roca, I noticed you live in central VA…we went to the Museum of Natural History in Martinsville and they “Beyond Jamestown:Virginia Indians Past and Present.” When we were there the Monacan had a display…the Plecker story…etc. I wish it had been a little larger, but was very interesting.

Roca its good to get a review about the event. I live in the Hampton Roads area but, had no intention on going to this event.
I actually planned to attend the Nottoway Pow Wow that weekend but, had a family emergency come up.
I am surprised that there was no cover charge but, that wouldn’t have made a difference in peoples behavior. I was curious as to how it turned out since it was open to the public and knowing the the rudeness and growing lack of respect from people in this area. I’m not surprised to hear about the kids on wheelies. Its a big problem out here. You can’t even go to the mall or the grocery store without some kid whizzing by you in them. They have already been banned by the local schools in my district due to the hazard posed. Hampton Coliseum should put a ban on wheelies as well. I have already been crashed into at the grocery store because the girl was going so fast and couldn’t stop until she ran into me and only said Oops. I have notice the rudeness in this area get progressively worse over the years. Parents just seem to look the other way when their child does commits rude and selfish acts. Its sad.
Shirley, if my understanding of the Martinsville pow wow is correct, it will be held behind the museum. I was glad to see you post about going to the museum…it corrects what I had heard about the Martinsville pow wow.
Previously, some vendors and dancers told us they had not attended in several years because of the area of the city where it was held. They had had their cars broken into and felt very ill at ease around the “streetwalkers” in the area. So I am assuming that they have changed the venue and moved it to a better place like the museum…any way, I guess we will go and see for ourselves. I am thinking of taking my grandson, who’s 5…figure he might enjoy the museum and pow wow…he was asking to go to one while he was here this weekend and watching GPA work on his “toes”.
I agree that a cover charge would not have made a difference. I see this at one particular pow wow that is put on at a local school. There is no respect for the circle…but, I am reminded that this pow wow is for the students to bring in more NA students….and it’s more of a gathering than a pow wow…it’s held indoors and has no spirit to speak of…but, it’s a good place to see folks you have not seen all winter (it’s held in Feb.). And as far as respect of kids….it’s up to the parents…but, we have an absentee society…two parents, if they are lucky, and both work and leave the kids to their own devices. So it might take an elder to teach them…..eh?

I am not sure of the Pow wow, but the Museum of Natural History is associated with the Smithsonian. They had a display for the Jamestown anniversary. I love museums and wish we had been able to see the one in Roxboro…next time.:)

That sounds like what I saw on the website. And you can’t do everything….gotta leave something to bring you back, huh? Maybe next year I can take some vacation time off and introduce you to more folks.
Oh, we will be back…those were some great “cukes”, lol. The East Coast is so full of history…so much yet to see. I would love to meet more great folks…I cannot forget Sam and his wife; what wonderful folks.:)
