Hello,
I am trying to find my relatives that are still residing in Holister NC. My great- great grandfather ( John M. Harris) and great-great grandmother Lillie Hall parents of my great- grandmother Willie P. Harris who married my great-grandfather (James Baker Plummer) and moved to Warrenton. Their children (Maria Lillie, Willie Beatrice, Benjamin and Lizzine) were all listed on their birth certificates as colored. My great-great granmother died and my great-great grandfather married Rosa Evans and they had ( Ed Harris, Anthony Harris, Robert Harris, Jessie Harris, Julia Harris, Susie Harris (Indiancorn). I am so proud of my Haliwa Saponi heritage and since I have been an adult and have been going to the Pow Wows (in NC/VA) there is a spiritual oneness that I have with my people that is beyond words. There is an Anthony Harris in Holister. I wonder is he my cousin? If you have info that can help me find my family in Holister NC please let me know.

Bingo! This is the info I have been searching for many years. I remember relatives that were Jones now that I see the name listed. Funny how you already know things and don’t realize it until you see them again in later years.
Thank you so much. I pray that Grandfather will bless you more than you will ever imagine.

I may have found John Harris in 1870 Nutbush Twp and John S. Plummer in 1870 Twp 10 (Littleton), both twp’s in Warren Co., but I’ll have to do some more digging to be certain.

May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #15257Bill,
Thank you so much. I wonder if the Carter’s were from Va since Rosa was from Va. We didn’t have any Carter’s in Warrenton that I can remember. I see that it has John S Plummer listed as being from NC on the census you sent yesterday, but he was listed as from VA on 1930 cenus. I think he was originally from VA from what I can remember my aunt (Willie B) has told me. I was raised since the age of 18 mths by her. Maria L. is my grandmother ( my mom’s mother). I am excited to find out this info. I wish I had some of the pictures of the Harris side of the family who had very prominent Native American features. The Plummers did as well.
Thanks again for all your help.

May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #15259I’ve not found John S. Plummer listed as born anywhere but NC.
He lists his father as born in Virginia.
The Addie Carter listed on the 1930 census living with John and Rosa Harris, may be one of their daughters. If she were born sometime in 1910, after the census was taken, she would be about 20 or 21 in 1930. I haven’t yet found this Harris family in 1920 to find out if she is one of their daughters.
May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #18388Bill,
I was doing some research on Della Owens (John S. Plummer’s mother in-law) was married to Aaron Owens. They were both from Halifax Va. Aren’t they Blackfoot in that area? I do know that they were both NA. The John Plummer (John S. Plummer’s father) was from Va. John S and the other Plummers were from Littleton NC which use to be a part of Hollister. I found out lately that Halifax (NC) , Warrenton, Littleton and Hollister was one big area (not divided) in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Littleton is very close to the Va line (northern end) close to Emporia. We went to Emporia a lot during my childhood.
Let me know something on the Blackfoot questions.
Thanks,
Jade
May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #18411Jade, is the Blackfoot ID in your family?
I’d be curious if there was any records of any Harrises ca 1790, 1800.
May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #18460Linda,
I’m not really sure. The Plummer side is from VA and according to the leads I have they were possiblly from Emporia or somewhere in that area. I did find the Owens (Aaron and Della) were originally from Halifax Va. Are there Blackfoot from there?

May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #18560Bill,
I went on one of the Blackfoot links listed on one of the post and I found Owens on the Blackfoot surname list. I’m really excited about finding out this info on the Plummer/Owens side of the family.

May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #18574Bill,
I wasn’t even thinking when I asked about Halifax Va. I knew that it sounded familiar to me. Halifax is about 25 miles from Roxboro NC where I was living before I moved back to Warrenton. I was reading that in that area there are Blackfoot, Occoneechi Saponi and Monacan. How can I find out which one of these the Owens would have been? Halifax is in the South Boston VA area and about 23 miles from Danville Va. Can you research and find out which one of these (tribes) the Owens would probally originate.

May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #18585Jade,
I doubt we’ll be able to identify them to a specific Siouan tribe in any ultimate case due to the mixing and remixing of the bands and tribes and lack of records, but I’ll see how far back we can take these.
Bill
May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #18593The other thing is that the Blackfoot ID is a marker for the others. We’re not sure where the name came from, only that when you find families that trace back to VA/NC Siouan roots you find the Blackfoot ID popping up, apparently what people called themselves. The old colonial records don’t mention them at all, but it appears it’s what Siouan people called themselves more than anything else. Some think it was used hapharzardly the way the word Cherokee was often used, but it was only used, as far I can see, by people associatied with this Piedmont, even when they left out of here 300 years ago. This to me means a purely Siouan etymology.
May 11, 2005 at 1:17 am #18600Thanks Linda
