Hello again debra. My g-grandfather robert jackson goins b-1870 was married to emma hickman b-1874 she was a daugther of mazariah and peter hickman. On the 1930 cencus for emma it has her as indian and 55 years old. Could my g-grandmother be kin to your granny? I got this from the 1880 cencus for mazariah hickman or peter hickman. I have to keep changing pages and I loose things. My father’s family changed their last name from goins to owens when they moved to danville, va in 1935.
Owens and Goins, from my research, are both strongly Cherokee surnames and also Melungeon. Where was your grandmother on the 1930 census?

The only thing I found with Mazariah ( also had a listing for John Hickman)
was the The Urton Family Tree.
It was a Mazariah Thomas born before 1790 , died unk.
They had Collins names and photos and one was an America Collins.
I think a descendents of John Hickman moved to TN and there was a
daughter or maybe granddaughter with that name : America.

Since one descendant was named America, I would look for a Missouria or Missouri or Missourah (a name that got butchered a lot by census takers).
Hello, I was working from the http://www.ancestry.com web site. I typed in emma goin and it shows her living in madison, rockingham ,north carolina. borned 1875 and married to robert goins and race as Indian. It also has the names of two children russellgoin and clovie goin. She had another son ,my grandfather name john walter goin borned 1895 and died of T.B in 1932. I have noticed that on different years of the cencus the race has been white instead of Indian. THOMAS
Hello, I have found a MAZARIAH HICKMAN home in 1880 census was SNOW CREEK, STOKES COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. borned 1858 in north carolina. she was married to petter he was borned in north carolina also. The census has her race down as MU IN 1880. Household members were petter , mazariah, emma, minerva ,and millie all last names hickman. thomas
Hi Thomas Mazzie (mazariah) was my gg-mother on my grannys side. mazzie and peter were first cousins.mu stood for mullotto. This was after the trail of tears and census workers usualy only listed people as white colored, mulotte or free persons of color. I just recieved some info from a lady that sent me a copy of a registration card about joe henry richardson grannys husband the date on it is 1878 neat right.I know peter and mazzie are burid in the harris cematary in goinstown) Maybe in some way we are related. debra
HI again I think joe henry gg-father was joesph richardson. I plan to go to madison library to see what they. also there is still goins in the area called goins town. the old indian school is still standing. I am excited about finding out about family.I’m just not good on the computer so I don’t know how to get to other sites and when i do get to them I dont know how to proceed. peter hickmam was son of john hickman and mariah bridgeman
hi debra, I know about the three casses some man , I can’t remember his name it might be plecker or something and he had something to do with the registration of people and the census. He decided to class persons like that to make it easier or some dumb thing. I think I read that he classified indians and any one that look not totally white or totally black and put everyone else down as mulatto instead of ,indian, spanish or what ever. It took along time for this to change and it makes it hard to find the native americans from the other peoples. I am not very good at explaining it ,but the paper I read on it explained it alot better than I. I am sure I am some kin to many people from the goinstown area that I guess we are all some cousins make 2nd 3rd or who knows. I just wanted to know my father’s heritage and I have learned alot our school history books left out about native americans.I think you can be sure about your native american links . Good luck finding all the information you are looking for. It seems I cannot find a place to be satisfied to stop looking. thomas
Hi Thomas, I just went to visit my aunt evelyn and talked to her about grannys family. she could not remember all their names but grannys sisters were emma ,lou,cora brothers jim,jack,bill and there were several she could not think of. But we could be 2 cousins. you could be evelyns 1 cousin. evelyn is 83 years old i’m 57 how old are you and where do you live.I’m in greensboro,nc I got so excited I had to come straight home and send this. debra
My g-grandmother emma hickman goins father was pete hickman and her mother was mazariah hickman. On the 1930 u.s. cencus emma is idenified as indian and I would think that it meant that she was full blood indian. That would mean both parents were indian wouldn’t it? tommy
DEBRA, I was at the goins cemetery two weeks ago and camcordered all the stones. Pete hickman and mazaria hickman were there on a large a large stone. Somewhere in this hickman goins marriage we are kin I beleive. There were hickman and rickmon and rickman buried at this cemetery. It is less than an hour’s drive from my home. thomas
I descend from Fanny Gibson who married Ansel Rogers. Fanny was born around 1790. She was the daughter of Champ Gibson and Elizabeth. I have seen others assert Elizabeth was a Goins. Does anyone have any proof one way or the other ? I know nothing about Champ or Elizabeth’s parents, etc … But, they’re buried at Goinstown.
Hi Thomas I thought I had lost you. I live about 1 hour away in greensboro. It really sounds like we are 2nd cousins. did you get all the info were I went to see my aunt evelyn. She says she cant remember much but she thinks g-pa pete was indian. I would love to meet you at the cemetary 1 saturday please keep in touch and write the madison library . the geneology department can help. Thats where I want to go next when I get a day off. debra
