Hello…
I’m new to the board – some may know me through other boards, but anyways, I’m just here to keep up with what Linda has to say! Afterall, she’s right down the road from me so.. (It’s like they always say around here in good old Greene County – when you ain’t got any business of your own to tend to, tend to everyone else’s.)
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4608Well hello there,
Never know who you’re gonna meet on the net.
Glad to see you made it over.

March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4609Really, we do have to meet one of these days. I can just see it now. We’ll be chatting on boards all over the net and I’ll move away and we’ll completely forget to ever talk in person, even though we’re just down the road.
Have any free time over spring break?
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4610We’re in the Easter Tournament over at Guy Smith Stadium this weekend. After Tuesday, I should have a little bit of free time on my hand during the day after lunch (I usually get out of class around 11:00.)
I was kind of hoping to see you at the East Carolina pow-wow last weekend (I wore my GC hat for identification.) I will be at the NC State pow-wow during the weekend of April 6th.
My family is planning a family reunion in Garner at 12:00 that same afternoon, so I am going to miss part of the event, but I’ll be there. I sure would like to see the grass dancing though as grass is pretty much what I want to get involved with.
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4611Sorry I didn’t make it to the ECU pow wow. I wasn’t feeling well and wasn’t up to it. One afternoon this week wíll be great. The whole family will be home and we can go look for arrowheads out behind the house.
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4612I will probally do the same sometime this week myself – I am planning on checking out that field that I talked with you about that the “old farmer” owes. I heard some of the trees out there used to have some interesting writings on them and according to one of the books that I got from the libary “The History of Greene County,” it mentions that there was a tree out on the Mewborn farm (you know what I am talking about) that had “No Lucke” written on it so, I think it is possble! The “No Lucke” tree fell (hurricane I think) in 1954 according to the book but they say that the stump is still there so…
If I find anything, I’ll run to get my camera and take you guys some pictures!
What are you doing this afternoon (Easter Sunday?)
Email (send your number again) or call (mine is in the book) – I should be here all day or outside or something.
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4613We might be free later this afternoon, I’ll send my number.
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4614Linda:
It was nice meeting you and your family this afternoon. I enjoyed my little visit. I have to admit through, my wrists got pretty tired after beating that drum!
Let me know when Eastern Bull plans to get together in Greenville for practice. Also, you need to get your son to teach me to grass dance – he is an impressive dancer!
— Derek
PS: I will be looking forward to the day I have to return the video tape so that I can visit again! *laughs*
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4615I enjoyed it too. Maybe you can come with us with when we go play for the daycare on Friday morning. You need to meet that lady who looks just like your great grandmother.
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4616BTW: that 1954 hurricane was probably Hazel. I was 18 months old at the time, and remember it well.
I lot of trees came down that year.
Now, Catchersmitt, can you describe how you felt during and after the drum? Well, besides the sore wrist.

March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4617I’d hate to put him on the spot for any detailed reaction. We were off-beat, off-key, fumbling around for the words and the tunes, just playing at playing. But having a good time.
Are you telling me you remember when you were a year and a half old?
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4618I was just trying to keep up with Linda’s husband beating the drum.
*laughs*
And according to my psychology book, people generally are not able to recall anythjing until around 2 1/2 to 3 years of age at the earliest, but yes, Hazel sounds about right.
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4619Well, my children will tell you they remember from before birth, which is likely off most psychologists’ radar screen. At least it is for those I know and work with.
I asked about the response because I’ve found that it doesn’t take much drum to trigger a resonance in the blood, and from that point forward, at least for me, there is, was, no turning back. The flute seems capable of causing a similar response, though somewhat different, perhaps more ephermeral, perhaps more feminine.
The drum caught me before I was 10, on a lonely stretch of Highway 64 I believe it was, but I didn’t know it for many years.

March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4620Well now, I guess that just begs the question, “What happened on Highway 64?”
March 24, 2002 at 10:41 pm #4621And… where on 64?
