My name is Evie, I came to this site by way of genealogy research, many yrs ago. Up till
now registering would not work for me! Great Place!!! Here is my surnames and area’s:
Paternal- Thompson, Welch, Brooks, Howell, Stewart, Gilbert, Marshall
Rice- Armick, Whitaker, Simmons
Area’s- TN, VA, N.C, KY, MO, etc
Maternal- Roach, Dillon, Sowards, Corn, Ashworth, Luttrell, Farley, Clay, Callicott, Perkins, James
Davidson- French, Day, Milam, Waggoner, Bell, Belcher, Clay, Stowers, Blankenship, Gibson, Holt
Area’s- W. VA, VA, N.C, OH, PA, MA, NJ, TN, KY, etc
There are so many more, these are most of main lines!

Gee! Was it something I said? My picture? Or What?
I have been researching the native indian question in my family for yrs! Was hoping to work
with folks here, as I came by this place due to possible connects? I could not get on the site to
post with your previous email set up! I had the post saved from a long time ago, but my computer
was hit last month by a storm and am using old computer and none of my saved info is on here!
My fathers family are from Claiborne Co, TN by way of Hancock Co. TN maybe before that Lee Co.
VA. There is no question to me that my grandpa was of part Indian descent, as a genealogist I
would want to find all I can but have met with a lot of problems with any sites dealing with native
genealogy!!! Any help here would greatly be appreciated!!! Well be looking in meantime for the posts

A good way to start using this site is to search each of your surnames and post about that surname on that thread. You will find threads on MANY of your surnames. That way your post will go to those posting on that thread by way of email notification. Good fortune on your search. aho

Hi, Evie! Just a note, many of your maternal names – Farley, Clay, French, Belcher, and Blankenship – turn up in the New River Giles County Virginia area well before 1800. Matthew and Sarah Payne French’s son John married Obedience Clay, daughter of Mitchell Clay and Phoebe Belcher in 1787. Blankenships and Farleys are all there too. I’ve been trying to trace my Paynes, who are tied in somehow. Is this your family? I’m finding most of these names in Logan County WV too…

Yes this is my family, my mothers father Calvin Roach was the son of William Roach and
Nancy Catherine Dillon who is the daughter of John Wylie Dillon and Catherine Sowards, John is the
son of McCager Dillon & Mary Callicott (Calicoat), McCager is the son of Samuel Dillon & Chloe Farley
who is the daughter of Thomas Farley & Judith Clay! My mother’s mom was Tiretia Davidson who
was the daughter of Andrew Davidson & Candis Bell, Andrews mother was Margaret French and
Candis mother was Julia Belcher whose line also leads to the Clay family~! I know that I am related
to alot of these families on several lines, the Clays on more then 2 lines!!! I have a Sallie Payne
who is the wife of Matthew French, this is a strait line to Andrew Davidson, his mother being the
daughter of Andrew French & Rebecca Day, Andrew the son of James French & Susan Hughes, James
the son of Matthew French & Sallie Payne which makes them my gggg grandparents!!! I have not worked
on the Payne line and this gives me a good reason to start! Sorry I have not been on much as I have been
sick and was put on meds that knock me for a loop!!! If you want any info or help on any of these lines
let me know as we are most likely distant cousins!

We might need to start a new thread in another forum on surnames or such and see if they will move this there? There is stories of Indian blood in the Dillon and Perkins and Ashworths also a few of these lines have
been related to the Melungeons? I have not started on any pacific lines as I also have these possible connections to Indian and Melugeon on my fathers side as well! was waiting to be able to join here as there
is alot of bickering and rudeness on alot of forums and such that deal with such! I don’t find that here and
really hope that y’all excuse my second post as I was impatient and got this habit of expecting the worse
from these other sites!!! That is my hangup and I am sorry!!!

I don’t know of any Native American blood in the Payne, French, Clay, Belcher, Farley and Blankenship families, so I don’t know if there is enough for a separate thread. The only one I know I’m related to is the Payne family, and so far we haven’t figured out a connection to the Sally Payne who married Matthew French, although it appears that my gggg grandfather, David Payne, was associated with the family in some way. Or at least someone by the same name was!! There appear to be two David Paynes, who both appear in Giles and Tazewell Counties.
There’s an interesting Indian story though, which Mary Kegley made into a historical novel Free in Chains. There was a Catawba Indian, Rachel Findlay, who was illegally held as a slave in Virginia for 67 years – she won her freedom in 1820. She had been captured by the Clay family, and Mitchell Clay (whose daughter Obedience married John French) sold her to John Draper, of Draper’s Meadows. I don’t know how much is history and how much is fiction, but probably no one else knows the history of that area as well as Mary Kegley, and I suspect she has put a lot of fact in with her fiction.
There’s an fascinating court case involving some of these names here. I guess I find it fascinating, since it really brings the characters to life.

yea I am aware of that court case, have not got around to alot of my lines, as there is so many! Sometimes
I think I must be related to half of the south. As soon as I get off this medication I will start back on these lines!
I just don’t know yet were to start here, so as soon as I figure that out, i hope to be here as much as possible!
Yea I find it all fascinating as well!!! The lines on my moms side are stories that I need to put to rest, so to me there is doubt about the connection to Indian or Melungeon heritage on moms side!!! Good luck with your Paynes!
