Hello everyone,
I have been looking into and collecting family information for about 10 years and am wondering if there are indians in our family because of old photographs, orphans, and migrational history. My ggg grandfather on my paternal side in the Jones family and his brother were orphans supposedly born in North Carolina. We don’t know exactly where. They came out to the Platte area sometime in the mid to late 1820’s. It is rumored that they came out on an orphan train, but I know this is long before there were orphan trains. The in-laws were Potters from Cocke county Tennessee and had migrated from eastern North Carolina or maybe Virginia. They had Turners and Banks in their family. And they had written in a bible the names of a Gilliam family who had also come out from Cocke county TN. A cousin did a DNA test and found that we had matches with Jones families that were in that area of TN and Jones families from Albermarle county VA that later migrated to Granville county NC. Also there are Silvers in my family from Pulaski county KY that came out west around 1838. From photographs, clearly my gg grandfather and my g grandmother are dark non-Caucasian looking people. Curious if they might have african/indian ancestry….possibly even Saponi?
This process seems overwhelming but I am glad to have found this forum.
Family names Jones, Silvers, Potter, Turner, Banks, Horton, Tilton, Trullinger, Weathermon, Colburn, Hobson.

Welcome to Saponitown, Chris. I live in old Granville co and have 3 distinct lines of Jones. I may be able to help with this line if you have any specific Jones lines on that DNA match. One of the most prolific lines was the Ambrose Jones line with many descendents going to TN. What is the farthest back Jones name that you have?

My ggg grandfather Leander Whitfield Jones is the furthest back that we have recorded in our family history. He was born in North Carolina and migrated to the Platte area of Missouri with his brother Marvel Monteville as orphans. The story is that several brothers were left behind. We don’t know where they were born in North Carolina. My female cousin told me that her DNA test linked with some of the descendants of Joshua Jones in the Buncombe county area. ….Also Robert Jones jr. who was from Albemarle VA.? and lived in Granville county NC?
Leander Whitfield married Sarah Potter in clay county Missouri then later her sister Elizabeth when Sarah died. Sarah and Elizabeth’s father was Wilson Potter was from Cocke or Greene county TN and was married into Joseph Turners family in Haywood county NC.
Forgive me if any info. is incorrect.

There are lots of Potter connections on this site, including me. However, your Potters are not likely mine. Mine came from Baltimore through OH to IA. However, they were native. I recently met a person who knew them growing up and still does. He said you always knew a Potter by the black hair and dark eyes. He looked at a picture of my IA-born gggrandmother and said, “Yep, she is a Potter.”

Thanks for helping out with those lines. I have a photograph of my ggg grandfather Leander Whitfield Jones seated with his family. He died in 1862. This photograph doesn’t really show features. I also have a photograph of his grandson (Isacc Leander Jones) my great grandfather. He has dark wavy hair and has dark features.

My Hortons came from Lee and Russell county Virginia sometime prior to 1835. William Kemp Horton came out with his two sisters Elizabeth and Lucy and lived near the Platte area of Missouri. He bought property from the outlaw Cole Younger and changed his name to Whorton. William Hortons wife Mary Ellen Tilton’s family has surnames Tilton, Lum, Moore, Medford, and Harrison.

Potters may have come from CT from some info online.
Leander Whitfield Jones being possibly orphaned…. concentrate on Whitfield, Jones connections in NC… Another fleeting thought in 1830s, brown and black children got spirited away sometimes. They may be destined for slavery…. but being Indian … not looking African enough to be sold south…. they got bonded to the frontier.

Yes. You are right. I believe James Potter, Wilson’s father was originally from CT. He filed a pension in Cocke county as well as MO.
Interesting thoughts on bonded to the frontier not looking african enough. That’s not something I had not considered before.
OK, if you connect with CT Potters, then we may be related. I have a CT line of Potters too.

Okay. My Potters begin with a James Potter born July 6, 1759. He was a private in the Revolutionary war under George Rogers Clark in the Kaskaskia campaign in the Ohio river valley. After the war he resided in VA ??? For a time and then moved to Cocke county TN and then MO. Thanks for reaching out about the Potter family. Like to see if we might be related.. I have all of James’ kids info. if you are interested.
My Potters are kind of a mystery. The first one was allegedly a convict given the choice of prison or emigrating. He emigrated to Baltimore. This story is in the preface of a book of poems written by his great-grandson (not the convict part though but then, he was a preacher, I think). From Baltimore, the line goes to Licking County, OH. My direct Potter does not stop there, but continues on to Jackson County, IA where he is buried. He was a patriot in the Revolution.
A mystery is that he marries a Deuel whose line comes from NY via Saratoga. That line also has Potters in CT. It may not be anything, but it seems strange to me that they would not know one another, since they both end up in Licking County, OH.
This Potter line in Licking County is Indian or mixed.

Interesting on the different Potter families ending up in the same area of Ohio. I would like to do a test. Which type of DNA test is the best for matching families? Sounds like the next step.
Autosomal. You can do it through Ancestry, FamilyTreeDNA, or 23andMe. I think I read the cheapest way is to go Ancestry, download the results, and transfer them to FamilyTreeDNA which is free, although the free version is limited in listing the numbers of matches. You can also upload your DNA to Gedmatch for nothing. That way, you get the farthest possibility of matching someone.
