Hi. I’m Allen and have been searching to find the true Indian roots to my family. I know that my great grand father and great grandmother were listed as Black Foot on their marriage certificates. My Grandfather was listed as colored on his birth record. My grandmother was listed as colored/other.
My great grandfather was a Parker from Cumberland, Virginia. My great grandmother was a Brown from Cartersville.
It seems likely that I they were Saponi. Anyone have another way of connecting the dots?
Welcome Allen, almost missed your post. So was this in Cumberland Virginia that, I assume, they filled in a marriage certificate as Blackfoot? What year would that have been? That’s an interesting piece of documentation you have there. I’d be interested in having a copy of it, if you wouldn’t mind. When was your grandfather born? He was a child of the two Blackfoot? That definitely would have been traditional Saponi territory, and I’ve heard those surnames in this connection before. How far back can you trace that family to those environs? If you’d like me to, I can link a pdf of that marriage certificate off of our Blackfoot article, http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm. That may be all the “recognition” you’ll get, but it may be as good as it gets for us.
We found the certificate from the church in some papers my grandmother had. Attached to it was a page with general information about the family. I had heard rumors of Indian in our family for years. My grandmother said often she her mother was Pamunkey.
My family goes back into the 1700’s in Cumberland. Actually, some of the women come out of the Dinwiddie, Amelia, and Chesterfield area. I live less than five miles from the Old Sappony Road.
I requested a copy of the certificate. Once I get one, I’ll send you a scan.
