Hi everyone,

Have had a bit of time to research. My latest finds only bring more questions… oh well….. here goes…

Tuscarora Indians

Listed as Tuscarora Indians on deeds to lease over 8,000 acres in southwest corner of Bertie County, North Carolina between the Roanoke River and Roquist Poccosin: “

Senicar Thomas Howell is listed:

He may be brother to my

Joseph Howell Born: 1733 Edgcombe County NC

(learned Bertie and Edgcombe were part of the same county til 1741)

Joseph Howell -married to Mary Starling

then:

Joseph Howell ll

Eli Howell

Married to Nancy Love (we know she is Saponi)

This family traveled the traditional known migrations paths and lived in mixed communities. Eli Hoewll pastered a mixed blood church but I had no real connection to his family tribal affiliation much less an official record.. By the time they landed in LA they were living with the group listed below:

“but the SC families were the largest and most predominant group. In the early 1900’s these families applied for compensation as “Cherokees” and were censused as “mixed-blood Cherokee”…yet their descendants were given federal recognition in the 1980’s as “The Poarch Band of Creeks”!! “

There is more to research as Joseph Howell’s brother is listed most places as Thomas. At least it gives me another direction to research.

When i found this site i was looking for melungeon info on Tipton (strong probability there too) but they cover more than that group in different parts of the site.
