I was wondering if anyone on the forum knew if there was a thread about the Hunter family or surname?
I did try a search, but I’m not sure it is working right.
May 12, 2006 at 9:37 am #21252Hi Collins!
Here is my so far limited info. One of John Hunt and Mary Jeffreys children, Elizabeth “Betsy” Hunt married Osborne Hunter Dec. 2 1800 in Franklin co NC. Parents of Osborne Hunter were Theophilus Hunter and Jane Lane. I’ve never checked it out beyond this.

May 12, 2006 at 9:37 am #21259If you refer to Sue’s other thread about Simon Jeffreys &c., in post #9 of that one I referred in passing to several members of the Tar River / Cedar Creek enclave having moved to SC, including some who were Tories.
One of the names I had noticed in that group, but had not actually found in Franklin Co., was Osborne Lane (also spelled Lean). Seems pretty likely that he fits into the Lane family Sue has just mentioned. He was a Tory, was wounded in the arm by patriots (i.e. rebels, against Britain) in a skirmish at [Thomas] Hulin’s Mill on Catfish Creek, about 12 miles NNW of Marion Courthouse, SC. He escaped into the swamp [Brenda Sampsel take note] and eluded them. Osborne Lane survived and was a respected Marion Co. citizen until his death in 1840. This is from Alexander Gregg, History of the Old Cheraws (1867), p. 359. I don’t have the book, just copied that reference, about 15 years ago. I also noticed that on an 1825 Robert Mill map of Marion Co. SC, most of the houses near Hulin’s Mill belonged to Bass families. I believe Heinegg lists Shoemaker, Sweat, and Demery as part of this SC community, but whether these came from the Tar River NC enclave I don’t know. Some of the Chavis and Goins families were on Tar River (I believe Chavis and Snelling were together), but I’m not sure that they were on Cedar Creek. Part of the problem is that most of my info on their locations came from deeds, and a lot of these folks didn’t own land. Another problem is that 15 years ago I was looking for Hulin, not all these other names, and notes I happen to have on them are sort of incidental.
May 12, 2006 at 9:37 am #21263My cousins Darlyn and her brother Harold Dewayne were adopted by my Uncle Howard Glenn Collins. Their mother was named Wanda and I’m in the process of getting the maiden name. Darlyn’s father was Wayne Hunter from North Carolina. I will be getting more information on this in the near future.
Moving on, my other Uncle Wylie Joe Collins adopted his boy named Nicky Osbourn/Osborn. They ran with the Bollings or Bowlings. Not sure on the spellings just yet. This is new information to me and I’m trying to get more specifics.
Darlyn married into the Bruton family.
I was wondering about the Hunters cause I was sure I had seen some discussion on the Hunter family. I also interested to hear about the information on the Osbourne family. Not sure as yet to the correct spelling for Osbourne.
Again this is new information that I’m getting filled in about regarding my Uncles families at present. I will try to get Darlyn to come to the board and share what other information she may know.
Some of these close relatives lived in Sulfer Springs, TX.
May 12, 2006 at 9:37 am #21480The Hunter family that lived in Surry County, N.C. would probably be related to Wayne Hunter. He was from Mt.Airy, N.C.
More to come.
May 12, 2006 at 9:37 am #21652There is a Parsons/Lloyd family of Cherokee descent from a Cherokee named John Hunter and Ann Parsons that lived in GA. The Dawes applications are on file for this line.
