as an ancestor. Saponitown has Bass ancestor information. Many forums discuss Bass descendents from West Virginia and fall into four categories: The largest is those who are descended from Nathaniel Basse, son of Humphrey, These are mostly in the Southeastern US. The second group are those descended from Deacon Samuel Bass of Massachusetts (I am of the opinion that said Samuel Basse was a brother of Nathaniel Basse). These are mostly found in the New England states. The third group would be those of eastern European ancestry, whose names were unpronounceable in English and were assigned the name “Bass” by the immigration authorities because some part of their names resembled “Bass”. The fourth group would be those of African ancestry. Many of whose ancestors had been slaves of masters surnamed Bass, and for what ever reason had adopted their former masters’ surnames.I am just wanting to trace my roots as far back as I can.I was told there was no connection to the Nansemond tribe as far back as the early 1800s. Any help you can provide would be helpful! Thank you!
