Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Thank you, Linda! I am fascinated by linguistic studies. I will be getting those tapes and ordering that book mentioned above.
One more thing–how is “Siouan” pronounced (did I even spell it right?? It’s late and my 2-year-old is waiting for his bath while my 8-year-old is dabbling in skin cream making experiments–I need to do kiddie corral and send them all to bed…my 13-year-old is already there–amazing!!! ZZZZ Ok, enough babbling here-please pardon!).
Like “Red Metis”,(1/30/2006) when I first signed up on this site,I was curious about how to pronounce the ethnic names “Saponi’ and “Tutelo”.
According to Webster’s New International Dictionary,2nd Edition,Unabriged,c1934,G.C. Merriam Co.,Saponi is pronounced with the a as
in “arm”,the o as in “old”,and the i as the e in “event”.So,depending on one’s accent,that would yield a pronunciation of “Suh-poh-nee” or “Suh-poh-nuh”.
With regard to Tutelo,it’s with the u like the oo in”food”,the e like the a in “ale”,and the o like in “old”.So that would yield the pronunciation of
“Too-tay-loh”.
Since we’re on the subject, how would one pronounce other names of other Tutelo/Saponi-speaking tribes such as Eno,Occaneechi,Cheraw,Mahenips/Manehips(?),
Monacan,etc.?Thanks!
Roca
P.S.-How come when I type a letter to this forum,it doesn’t line properly,no matter what I do?
