I agree whole heartedly, I grew up in real indian country, I mean that I grew up between 2 reserves one 12 miles south the other 10 miles west, I went to school with folks from both reserves and even a third from the north about 60 miles away, later I went to college and discovered a whole new world of Cree people, new names again.
Some of the names I grew up with were, Many Grey Horses., Big Tobacco.,Weasel Moccasin., Many Fingers., Prairie Chicken., Big Plume., yellow Old Woman., Brave Rock., and many others., my brother in laws last name aswell as my niece and nephews last name is Eagle Child, I really enjoy these names.
In the north from here is; Sparkling Eyes., Blue Eyes., Strawberry., Cardinal., Red Bull., Shirt., Iron Shirt., etc.
have we ever seen any other names besides Ned Bearskin’s in the south that relate to the Eastern Siouan people? maybe “Corn”?
I find it is somewhat split here where I am, as for names, but that is not to say they are not known by another name in their community.
The Cree are beautiful…I used to date (when I lived in Montana) a young man who was Cree/French, however his name was Bobby and his last name very French (I will leave it out to protect his privacy).:)
