Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
howdy —
just signed up here.
we have photos of ancestors who look nearly full-blood taken arond 1910 — they too were Indians in Arkansas who moved to Tx and later moved into the chickasaw nation, IT, —
later mixing with whites from after 1910 on to present
surnames we’re lookin for are Richey (various spellings), Wood(s), and Wayland who’d been from Va (1797, unknown before that time) to In 1810s to Ar (1830s) to Tx (1870s)to Ok (1870-present). They married Cherokees in Ar (surnames Looney, Guess & Brown)
thanks if you know of these surnames ahead of time — wadv

The fact that there were Indian slaves doesn’t surprise me at all.US slavery wasn’t just a black thing;it was an economic institution.
“Through Indian Eyes” (Reader’s Digest,1995,p.59) mentions that slavery
was at least one reason for the Tuscarora relocation from NC to NY.
J.A. Rogers in his series “Sex and Race”
(3 book series) which is about the African
diaspora claims that during the US slave era, vagrants from European port cities were kidnapped, blackened up a bit (suntan),and passed off and sold as “mulattoes” at US ports.
I lived for many years in FL.Florida’s
Seminoles and Miccosukees accepted runaway black slaves and both blacks and
natives fought several wars against the US government in the 1800’s.
I’ve heard of Katz before and his book
“Black Indians”.Haven’t read it through,
but I believe Katz is correct in saying that
most black Americans are part-Indian.Whether they acknowledge it is another story.
