Below is information quoted from the following web site regarding Blackfoot:
http://www.blackfootelders.com/articles.htm#9article
“Not the Blackfeet”
“It seems many families have this tradition of “Blackfoot” ancestry. However this is not the *Blackfoot* of Montana etc.. The Dakotah southeast Siouan) around 1200 AD occupied territories, which are now
parts of Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and the Carolina’s. The five bands
of the Dakotahs were the Ohinupa, Minnicoujous, Hunkpapas, Itajepchos, and the Sihasapas (the *Blackfeet* or Black Moccasin band). These are what are known as Saponi (Sapony) which I believe is a corruption or evolution of the word Sihasapas. The Saponi as well as other smaller, lesser known aboriginal American Nations, as their nations began to lose identity as a nation, began to move about and seek refuge with other nations such as the “Principal People” (Cherokee) etc. This is probably the “Blackfeet” one hears in lot of family traditions. This also helps to explain why people have traditions of Cherokee ancestry when in reality their ancestors belonged to one or more smaller nations such as Saponi, Chickahominy, Gingaskins, Mattapony, Nanticoke, Nottoway, Pamunkey, Rappahannocks, Weanock, Werowocomo, Tuscarora, Powhattan, Hatteras etc.”
“Also it should be noted that there were several “tribes” or “bands” of
aboriginal American Nations who were under the “Blackfoot”
Agency-Reservation.”

April 11, 2001 at 2:51 pm #5053Has anyone else ever seen the Historical marker that used to be on old Rt. 33, W. of Elkins,WV, near the site of the Fossil Park? It mentioned the Blackfoot of the Seneca.
April 11, 2001 at 2:51 pm #5054Linda, In response to the “I” there is a link above. I saw no name attached to it. I emailed but no reply. Barry
April 11, 2001 at 2:51 pm #5055No, Karen I have not seen it. Will you post what the marker says on this forum? Thanks Barry
