Hello. My name is Roe and I’m a lurkaholic. 😉 Actually I’m just painfully shy.
My father’s grandparent’s were Truman Bentley Odell and Mary Hurst, both born, married, and died in Pulaski County Virginia. Other surnames also from this area of southwest VA are Nunn and Breeding.
My husband’s family tree is what originally brought me to this site, and has brought me back today.
My husband’s father’s side is from Lawrence County, Kentucky, and Columbus, Ohio. The surnames for these areas include Spencer, Moore, Rose, McKinster, and many more. Family history states that the Spencer and Rose families are Kentucky Blackfoot, and the Moore side is Cherokee.
His mother’s side is Robinette from Pike County, KY and Columbus, Ohio. I have very little on this side.
Ok, anxiety’s starting to creep back in so I’ll duck back into my mousehole for a while. Nice to meet you all.

I am familiar with a couple of your names. SPENCER is one of my main lines out of West Virginia but some of them migerated to Ohio. Odell went west to Washington state with some of my people but were originally from West Virginia. Robinette connect with the Collins around Pike Co. Kentucky and along the Tug fork of Big Sandy River which divides the two states.
By the way….no reason to be shy. None of us here on the forum bite. We enjoy meeting new people and getting aquainted. 😉

My husband’s line of Spencers migrated from Charlotte County, VA (around the mid 1700’s)to Lawrence, KY (1800’s to present), and then to Columbus, Ohio in the early 1900’s. I have a Mary Ann Collins who is a dead end for me. All that I have on her is that she married Lewis R Spencer and died around 1898/99 in KY.
The Odells on my side drive me nuts! Not only did they do the naming patterns bit, and all married Elizabeths, Sarahs, and Marys, they also seem to have “swapped kids”. I’m not sure how to describe it, but it’s really confusing on the census. I’ve given up on figuring out all the Abrahams, James, and Jeremiahs! LOL!
I do know that many Odell cousins lived in what is now WVA.
I do believe my husband’s mother’s family was from the Tug Fork area. Her parents were Willard and Thelma Robinette. I believe Willard’s father’s name was Delmon.
I could dig up more details if anything looks familiar to you. For now though I’ve got to head to bed so I can get the kids off to school in the morning.

I am moderator of the “History” forum. If you want to know the history of a county, city, river, valley or et al — post it there. Sometimes history of a region can give insights into migration patters, the types of people who lived there, and supply reasons why your family might have lived there for a time and then moved on.

🙂 Hi, I am new here. I live in Los Angeles. I am involved in my family tree research. I was told that there was an Indian in our Edwards line that was traced back to Greenville, SC. My cousins think it is Cherokee. But I checked the locations of the family surname lines (Ford, McCallahan, Edwards and Hillier)
and they were not located anywhere near Western North Carolina where the Cherokee people live today. So this whole thing was puzzling.
I noticed two lines that merged into our Edwards line. One
was a Ford family line that was from Prince George, Virginia
down to Greenville, SC. The other line was McCallahan from Culpepper, Virginia whose line was originally from James River, Virginia.
I noticed that a lot of Edwards people declared themselves as Cherokee on the internet. I found one Edwards man who is enrolled member of his Absentee Shawnee mother’s tribe in Oklahoma. He told me that he inherited his Cherokee blood from his Edwards father whose father came out of North Carolina.
I found several Edwards were enrolled on later rolls. I have to go now cuz I am in the library and someone is waiting to use the comptuer. So I will talk to you later. E-mail me if you are interested in discussing this. Thank you.

I have lots of Edwards in my NDN lines. I do not have McCallahan, but I have McLane, McClellend, and McCallum which I now believe are all related. They all come to Iowa with the Edwards families and intermarry.
We too have the story Cherokee but I am not sure, as they did not follow those routes. I have seen an online history of one of the counties where my folks lived in the mid-1800’s. The author, who was emphathetic towards NDN, was trying to call the Iroquois who were living there, Cherokee, because both tribes spoke/speak an Iroquois language. I figured it was something like that. Since Cherokee were considered tame, better to be called Cherokee, if you can’t pass as white.

Hello I am in search of some family history and was wondering if anyone on the boards could help? I do not know alot of my fathers history but I do know he was a blackfoot in KY and that his father died at an early age. Last name in Justice. Can anyone help me?

I think if ya’ go to the geneology forum and post your peoples first & last names any birth dates, death dates, marriage dates and to whom, names of counties and towns and such, someone might be able to help ya’ a bit. thank you so much for the info. I am really in the dark about my family and this past spring I found out that my sister in law and me might be related. We look alot a like and just thought nothing about it but that brothers have the same taste. HAHA! But they live in MA were we live in FL. So we always past it off until we started to talke about our Indian backgrounds.
