May 18, 2006 at 2:16 am #22581That JUSTICE line has a lot of the same stories but I can’t reach a definite conclusion as to their origins.
There are a couple of COLLINS lines in Ky and Tn ‘from Maryland’ with Native stories but I have less confidence they were from Maryland as I work on them. It’s a work in progress.

Both Justice and Skeen show up as later variants of Swedish names (from New Sweden — Delaware River valley and adjacent northeastern MD). You might look at Peter S. Craig’s work, esp. his 1693 Census volume. These are similar to the case of “Mounts,” derived from Månsson (which shows up in Brenda Sampsel’s postings, and I think some others). Anyway Justice (in New Castle Co. DE and Cecil Co. MD) was Göstasson/Justasson. Skeen was, I believe, Kyn (or later Keen), further modified by eliding one of the Swedish given names that ended in “s” (such as Lars, Anders, or Måns Kyn). I’m not sure the latter has been proved, but I’m reasonably sure it happened. The Skeens show up in the Shenandoah Valley, circa 1750, in a community (near present New Market) that had a good many other Swedish families.
It was not at all unusual for New Sweden colonists and their descendants to be engaged in the Indian trade, as a family business.
I’m not claiming that this has anything to do with spouses of a Floyd County Collins; just that it would be a logical place to look.
