Renae,
Are you familiar with the details of the events and individuals involved with the “Hillsville courthouse massacre”? The main individuals involved were Carroll Co,Va Allens, Edwards, and Goads. My father’s people are all from Carroll and Floyd cos, Va.
December 21, 2007 at 1:21 am #29255Hi Janette! Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to tell you that I appreciate your welcome and offer to respond as friends. Also, Hey Renae! Yea, my Martin line aintagonna be easy either. I have a Mary Martin b 1820 d 1865 Nicolas VA m Soloman Bailes when she was 15. I really started digging for her parents, no luck yet. Found one census that could be her and she was listed a “mulatto”. Nothing definate yet though. Well, everyone have a Merry Christmas and I wish you peace and many blessings. Greydove~~^~~
December 21, 2007 at 1:21 am #29264Hi Dreaminghawk, Wow, I had no idea that such a fiasco happened in Carroll County. I found some articles online telling all the main details. I’ll have to do a little more searching to find out if any of those 😮 :p people are somehow related to my family. I’m not sure I wanna know. Thanks, though–Renae
December 21, 2007 at 1:21 am #29265Hi Janette, I dont think our Edwards chain is going to link up, but ya never know. Thanks for sharing. I will try to search back further.

The first rule in tracing ancestors is to not be upset by what we find. We can’t judge their actions, not knowing the whole truth. Sometimes lies are recorded as truth, either intentionally or inadvertently. We accept what we find without judging or condemning.
In this case, your family is sorta Romeo and Juliet of the feud. ….Edwards was on one side of the fight and Goad was on the other side ..LOL. Sidna and Wesley Edwards were the participants, being cousins to the Allens. I do know for a fact that phone inquiries at the Carroll Co courthouse into the genealogy of Wesley Edwards are likely to result in a hungup phone. This comes from a direct descendent of Wesley who we know from the Va powwow circuit.
There are 2 books that I know of which are excellent capsules of that time and area. The first is “The Man Who Moved A Mountain” by Richard C Davids. As far as I know, copies can still be found at giftshops along the Blue Ridge Parkway. First published in 1970.
The 2nd book is extremely rare. “Memoirs of J Sidna Allen- A True Narrative of What Happened at Hillsville, Virginia” written by J Sidna Allen in 1929 and published in Galax, Va. I have a copy that has been passed down through the family.
These 2 books tell entirely different versions of what happened and who shot first. Will we ever know for sure who was at fault? Probably not.
December 21, 2007 at 1:21 am #29722My great grandmother was Rebecca Edwards who married William Rawley Davis in 1888. They lived in Carroll County Virginia and later in Mt. Airy, NC. Rebecca was the daughter of Eben Edwards. Does anyone have a connection to this?

My Edwards ancestor was Indian she married to a Davis. They lived in Carroll County Virginia and Mt. Airy, NC.
Do you think you have a connection.

I am familiar with the Hillsville Courthouse massacre. My grandfather lived in Fancy Gap and was cousins to the Edwards. Do you have Edwards or Davis kin?
December 21, 2007 at 1:21 am #29728Hey Renae,
You musta snuck in when I wasn’t looking.
Our families are from the same neighborhoods. I’m from Ridgeway. Family all over Henry, Patrick, Stokes, Rockingham, Surry, FLoyd, Franklin, etcccccc.
Rachel Goard/Gourd/Goad was my ggggrandma (Md. Olive Branch). Pretty sure there’s also an Edwards connection somewhere.
(Olive also md Milly Goins, d of Stephen)
Anyway, just an FYI that may or may not help, Jesse Goard and family are listed in Richard Haithcock’s “Virginia Indian Census” book. From the 1850 census of Patrick County. No idea what led him to that conclusion, as he doesn’t do much in the way of stating sources. But there it is, fwiw. Two Martin families are included in the same county: Thomas (wife EMily) and Giles, Jr (wife Latitia) BUNCH of Goins listed, as ya might expect.
The Martin seekers might also look up Joseph and work your way back. He’d be from Henry or Pittsylvania County. Married several Cherokee women, as the stories go.
December 21, 2007 at 1:21 am #30083Tada. Just learned that above mentioned Jesse Goard was married to Elizabeth Martin. Not sure who Elizabeth’s parents were yet (will look for records of marriage). Jesse was my ggg grandma’s brother. Before Patrick County, their names/families show up in Henry, Pittsylvania, and Bedford Counties. Perhaps we connect. Jesse and Rachel’s parents were John Goard and Ailey (looks like Amey on record).
There appears to be an Isham Dalton in that mix, who md Mary Goad. Ken, is that your line, by chance?
