Pardon me but I am tired — just ran a 10 k race — 6.2 + miles — in 1 hr 13 min, 36.4 sec — finished 25th of 32 — sure am happy I didn’t end up in last place! 🙂 For most of the race I thought I was in last place . . . right at the end I passed 3 guys who were walking, and there must have been 4 others behind me I wasn’t aware of. This is an Air Force town and I was one of the only civilians running.
About half way through the race I lost site of the nearest person to me. I saw no one ahead of me and no one behind me. At this point I was sure I was in last place. :(. Then about a half mile from the finish I saw three guys just walking. I really wasn’t sure if I could catch them or not. I thought if they walk the rest of the way, I might have a chance. They were walking together and talking. I slowly caught up on them, until they were just maybe 100 yards from the finish and I was maybe 50 feet behind them. They kept walking and never saw me coming. I changed gears and just beat them by about 5 seconds. 🙂
I thought all I’d done was keep from finishing in last place, but when I saw the tally I’d finished 25th of 32 so others must have been behind me.

I can’t imagine running a mile, let alone 6+ !!!!
April 9, 2005 at 9:16 pm #14509Yes, congratulations, Vance. That is quite an accomplishment. I’m afraid running has become too strenuous for me. I’m hoping one day I’ll be able to take it up again.
April 9, 2005 at 9:16 pm #14542Dear Vance,
Way to go!Hope you keep at it.Was this your 1st race?
In my own distance running history,I’ve raced from 5K’s to marathons.Originally,I wanted to be an
ultramarathoner.
I made a big mistake in 1977 by making the marathon my 1st race ever.
3 marathons total.(1977,1991,1992)
All disasters-placed in bottom 1% of the field.
Now,I do 5ks and 8ks (3.1/4.97 miles).
Seem to be my best distances;once I finished in the 36-38%,60% of the field ahead of me.Feels better than the bottom
1% of the field!
If anyone needs some good books on
middle distance running (at least 800 meters but less than 10k/10,000 meters)
p.m. me and I’ll give you a suggested reading list.

When I was a kid in high school a couple of centuries ago, I could run long distance without any problem. The high school was near an irrigation canal and once a week in gym class our gym teacher had us run one mile up and one mile back. Me and one other kid, also named Hawkins, were always first and second. He always came in first, me second. He was light complected Negro, but he sure looked part Indian too. I was Caucasian and Indian, and we were both named Hawkins. I think we were both curious about our ancestors but it never was brought up.
Roca,
I have never been to a marathon. I’d like to try it once at least before I die. I’ve only run a 10k race twice. Well one other time I went around the city reservoir 3 times which is about 10k, but that wasn’t a race.
In the early 70s — 71 to 74 — I ran some, but since that time I have never run until about 5 years ago. The city reservoir is 2.1 miles, and I started going around it. First I’d run to one telephone pole and walk to the next. After about a year I was able to go the whole distance, but at a slow pace, but it took anothert year before I could do that on a regular basis.
I ran the 10k race 2 years ago and it took me 1 hr 22 min 52 sec, but I frequently had to stop and walk part way. I went the same pace, just no walking this time. The only way for me to make a faster time is to set a faster pace. I’ve noticed if I do that I’ll be right back to running from telephone pole to telephone pole . . . 🙂 If I don’t pace myself I’ll be huffing and puffing and get worn out quicker. Well, that’s my goal for next year, get accustomed to running at a faster pace.
If you know of any books feel free to mention them. 🙂
