Notes for Anna AYN
There is a story that Anna was taught by Missionaries and the only thing she could say in English was “ann ann” so this was why her name was listed as “Ann Ayn”.
May have been a Catawba or Cheraw(Lumbee). Two sources listed them as Catawba’s. Thelma Ritter in a 1975interview with her grandson, stated that the Hensons were from South Carolina. They were Catawbas according to her husband. Although he claimed Choctaw fromanother line, she was sure he was a little of this tribe as well. In thegenealogy lists she maintained the Indian was the woman Ann Ayers (Anna Ayn) andnot the husband. According to Thelma, the story she was told was that Anna wascalled a nickname of Anna Ann as a child. This would account for the error inspelling of the surname. To date I have no other data to verify this. JCT6/19/2006
