I have been researching my John Cooke and have come up with some interesting stuff in the process. I’ve found a couple of Land transactions. One is between John Cooke and John Chisholm concerning land in South Carolina in Craven County. “Of Highland near Santee Swamp about 6 miles from Neilson’s Ferry in St. Mark’s Parish. The Witness was George Richardson. John Chisholm is one of my ancestors.
Another Land transaction was between Henry Cooke of Meherrin Parish, Brunswick County, VA and his son John Cooke of Craven Co., SC. I found a Henry Cooke of Meherrin Parish, Brunswick Co., Va married to Mary Clarke. Henry’s parents were John Cooke and Hannah Jones. Hannah’s parents were James Jones and Rebecca lewis. John Cook’s parents were William Cooke and either Mary Blackborne or a Baldwin.
Another land transaction was by Joseph Cooke executor for John Cooke, deceased. The land was conveyed to Daniel Richardson, son of Amos Richardson?, of Henry County. This shows a Benjamin Cooke as son of John Cooke. The interesting thing about this land transaction are the witnesses. They are: Hugh Innes, David Willis, Samuel Bolling marked with an X, and Elkanah Hucherson. I would think that witnesses would be either good friends or relatives?
I understand that the name Richardson is the most common name among the Haliwa Saponi’s. Also, I’m intrigued by the name Elkanah.
Does anyone connect with this anywhere?

“1756 June 24.
John CHISUM. 400 on the upper side Straightstone Cr., between his own, Francis Luck’s and Chas. Dean’s lines”
(“Entry Record Book, 1737-1770; Land entries in the present Virginia counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick” by Marian Chiarito)
Hugh Innes’s 1st Entry is in 1758 on Panther Crk. His later entries refer to him as ‘Capt’ , probably militia. By 1762 he had acquired enough land to be referred to as “Gentleman” .
A 1740 (1746?) entry refers to “the path between Pinsons and Richardson” but the first unambiguous entry for Amos Richardson is dated 1748.
A Daniel Richardson, “son of Skip” Richardson [lived on Cuttawbo (Catawba) creek] has entries begining in 1755.
There are entries surveyed by a Hutchinson but no Elkanah appears.
There are entries for a Henry Baldwin beginining in 1763, but no entries for Blackborne, Blackburn, etc.
A 1773 entry refers to ‘a survey made for Blackhead’ on Snake Run.
Also entries for John Cook, James Jones, William Cook, etc., but don’t know if those are who you mentioned.

March 19, 2006 at 12:59 am #19855Hi Bill. Thank you for the information. I found a post that showed Elkanah Hutherson’s parents as William Hutcherson b 1718 died 1772 in Spotsylvania, VA and Ruth Waggener.
The Daniel Richardson is probably the one mentioned on the land record I found. Benjamin Cook, son of John Cook had a daughter Lucy who married Amos Richardson. I wonder if he was called Skip.
The entries for John Cook, James Jones and William Cook make sense if John Cook’s grandmother was Hannah Jones.
I think there is a family connection between the Cook’s and Bollings too, just from the names I saw while researching.
I’ve seen posts for “Skip” Richardson. I’ll go back to them and see if I find anything.
I’ll also look up Henry Baldwin.
The name Drury keeps coming up too. Usually as a middle name. There is a Drury Cook and a John Drury Cooke. Maybe that was a common name.
Hugh Innes may have just been someone who bought property from the Cook’s.
Someone is sending me some information on the Jones family. I will share that information when I get it.
