John Thomas Scott
My 3rd Great Grandfather was John Thomas Scott.
He married a woman named Katherine Puss. I think Puce may be an alternate spelling, but not sure.
John Thomas Scott was born around 1843 Tishomingo Co., MS the son of William Samuel Scott and Manivera Hamilton.
They all moved to Ellis County, TX then to Fannin Co., TX dates unknown.
They died in Honey Grove, TX.
John and Katherine had Nancy (“Nannie Scott”)Elizabeth Scott b. April 13, 1870 d. Mar. 14, 1936.
She married George Franklin McCulley circ. 1885 Tarrant County, possibly Ft.Worth or Grapevine areas.
George Franklin McCulley b. Feb. 2, 1852 Jackson Co., AL son of Richard McCulley and Nancy Lewis. He died Jan 17, 1925 Tarrant Co., TX
I don’t know anything else on the Scott family although there are some pictures in the Keel-Whitaker book of them all.
The McCulley family hits a brickwall at Richard’s parents William McCulley-McCollock and Ailsey Wilhelm. William was said to have either originally been a McCollock or that the name was actually McCulley-McCollock, but was possibly shortened later on.
There are dark complected family on both these sides as the picures of them bare this out and again there is a tradition of Native blood in these families.
December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #18202McCulloch is a name that I see frequently as I research my family. There are many buried in the same cemetery as Deb’s and my NDN ancestors.
I am not unconvinced that it is not a derivaton of McLane, McCallum, and McClellen, three names that are in our family, two of which have the Blackfoot ID.

Have you checked out the accuracy of this information yourself?
Bill
December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #18228George McCulley’s info. is found in the Keel-Whitaker book as well as the names of John Thomas Scott and Katherine Puss as parents to Nancy Elizabeth Scott .
The parents of John Thomas Scott are not set in stone as I have not done a census search on any of them in years.
I have not in fact had a good opertunity to do a complete census search on either of these particular families. Most of my time in the past years was spent on the Collins and Johnson lines. I believe that at one time I did find a census record for them here in Texas but I do not know what happened with those notes nor even which county. The parents name of John Thomas Scott came either from a rootsweb connection or something else that I saw and made note of, at this writting I do not have my notes in front of me.
The only way for me to check census records is by taking a trip to a library that has census records or the Ft.Worth Federal Archive. At this time, I rarely have had time to do that. I do intend to start making regular trips to these sources again after the New Year.
I personally never knew the McCulley or Scott family. My Great Grandmother Myrtle Irene (McCulley) Millican would have, but not me. The Keel-Whitaker book was put together by several family members and most of the information in that volume I believe to be accurate, however I have not ventured to try and re-invent the wheel on their research at this time regarding the McCulley or Scott connections.
The information on the McCulley-McCollock last name is a story that has been handed down in the family.
I guess the most pertinent answer to your question regarding the Scott and McCulley lines would be no.

The McCULLEY surname in this particular line, has had regional, phonetic spelling variations as they moved thru different areas.
In Tenn, it was McCULLOCH.
It looks like Richard’s father William M. Mcullock/
McCulloch/McCulley was born about 1790 in Jefferson Co., Tenn., where Richard’s wife Nancy’s father was also born.
There was a Joseph, Thomas & Archibald McCulloch there in the 1790s.
I still have a little work to do on this line.

December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #18328Bill thank you for this information. I was wondering about a name.
George W. LEWIS, 43, m, farmer, $0, $0, Tenn.
Matisha……………., 34, f, Ala. (probably “Martisha”)
NANCY………………, 15, f, Ala.*******
Matilda…………….., 13, f, Ala.
Thomas……………., 6, m, Ala.
Sintha………………, 5, f, Ala.
William…………….., 2, m, Ala.
In the above listing it has George’s wife named Matisha or Martisha. Is Luticia the same name? Our family has George married to Luticia Keel b. 1816 AL daughter of Jesse Keel b. 1779 Pitt Co. N.C. and Priscilla Whitaker b. 1784 N.C.
George’s parents are Amos Lewis b. 1779 VA Shenandoah Co. and Susana Robinson/Robertson.
Amos’s parents are George Lewis b. 26 Aug. 1744 Amelia/Shenandoah Co. VA and Anna Rachel Chrisman b. 1755 VA
Also I wonder about the regional name variations that are discussed from time to time within genealogy. For instance McCulley, McCullough, McCollock; I had always understood that the last names of the Scots peoples had to do with clan affiliation or place name. Wouldn’t each of these three names have a different clan affiliation or area of origin? Also the name Stodghill, Stogsdill, Sturgeon; in West Virginia Stodghill is Sturgeon for some reason unknown. When these families came to America do you think they changed their names or is it just spelling errors in the record?
December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #18333Martisha and Luthisa are diffenent names, tho’ as a ‘caviat’ I’d say that regional phonetic consonant and vowel pronounciation differences ‘might’ render them as the same name in micro-cultural localities where the recorder is nearly illiterate (but I won’t count on it), so it can’t be absolutely ruled out – but those ‘sounds’ are usually mutually exclusionary so I’ll settle-down with ‘they are different names’.
As for an “M” and an “L” name being the same phonetically?
It’s doubtful. More likely than an “L” equals an “M”, is to suppose a first and second wife scenario. Life expectancy was slim.
The difference in ‘clan affiliation’ might have more substance if these particular people were literate and were filling out the forms themselves as we do today, but “alas”, that was not the case in those days. Most of the nobility required a scribe to put their ‘thoughts to paper’ and it was not because they were ‘lazy’, as a few ‘delighted’ in ‘penning’ their thoughts to paper, but most people were not literate and the information we “see” on extant colonial American and U.S. records, is the verbal interpretation of what a census taker or county clerk, from an often different cultural background, “heard”.
That accounts for nearly all spelling variations in the records.
It is a recent ‘urban legend’ that immigrants did, or were ‘forced’ to change their name, when they came into this culture.
Phonetics, language differences, illiteracy, near-illiteracy – those are the finishing touches on the “name changes” which were only spelling variations. It’s not more complicated than that.

December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #18499Hey Collins,
As you know, I have been primarily trying to sort out the mystery of my Buck family line. However, I also have a Thomas Scott consorting with the Smith family line in KY and eventually this leads to a Buck/Scott marriage (Harry Buck and Lizzie Scott in 1904). They lived in Rogers, Arkansas for quite some time before moving to Springfield, MO. Anyway, I recently discovered that Solomon’s eldest daughter, Alvira may have married a Aaron Brown born in Cortland County, NY. They lived in Knox County, Ill (Haw Creek) prior to settling in Oneida County. In the course of looking at this Brown family, I came across this that I thought may be of interest to you:
After checking census’ and doing more research I feel that in the 1850 census of James Collins in Knox Co., Illinois
that Henry Collins living with this family is my great grandfather and so James and Mary Polly would be his Grandparents. He is of the right age and in the right county. I also think that Tabitha is his mother. From the 1840 census I think that McLee? is a son of James.
There is a Stephen, Thomas, Alexander and William who are possible sons as well.
James’ wife Polly/Mary is possible a Sharp(sharpe,
Shaup)from Virginia that later became part of Kentucky. James may had a brother named Alexander D. Collins that married Tabitha Sharp who was Mary Polly’s sister.
James, his son Stephen, and his brother, Alexander, were possibly living in Montgomery Co. Kentucky in the census of 1830.
I would really like to hear from this Collins Family with your thoughts, corrections and additions.
Pauline, I was told I have some Robinson/Scott connections from Mercer Co.KY. Not sure I have correct names but they settled in diff. parts of Ky.(Trimble Co.Henry Co.KY.)Indiana and a poss. Ohio area.(not sure of this)

December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #20555I just got this new information on my John Thomas Scott.
John Thomas Scott b. 29 April 1831, AL
married May Kate Thompson not Katherine Puss.
May Kate Thompson was called “Puss”. She was also called “Kitty”.
Now I wonder if her Thompson side is any relation to Nancy Thompson that married Washington Johnson.
I’ll have to contact my cousin Lyman.
December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #23828Any news on this Scott family or Thompson family?
December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #23850Bear in mind, that ‘Kate’ and ‘Kitty’ were both ‘nicknames’ in those days and even in some areas today, for Catherine/Katherine. ‘Mary Catherine’ was a very common name combination.
December 20, 2005 at 1:57 pm #23859The John Thomas Scott, b. 1831, was still in 1860 Alabama as far as I can determine. What leads you to think he’s yours?
Look at post #5 in this thread.
