Very interesting genealogy fact that I found tonight. It turns out that the William Johns who sold Bear Mountain to the Monacan Nation was my family. His father was my 7th great grandfather.
When I joined this forum many years ago, I did not know I had lines that are in relevant parts of Virginia. My branch of the family descends from Nancy Johns and were in Bedford County. Surnames include Wright, Talbot, Johns, Davis.

September 20, 2013 at 3:51 am #36278That is really interesting, thanks for sharing!
I don’t see any Johns in my family tree, but I have multiple “cousins” with that surname on 23andme. It is too bad that I can’t get past my 1798 Virginia brick wall.
It seems that I have possible Monacan ancestry, but nothing on paper. Your success does make me a bit more hopeful though.

Looking at your Smith-Carter album, I’m wondering if you are connected to the Indiana Jones/Smith group. Johns and Jones could be the same or connected lines. Going by Smith and Jones/Johns was definitely a way to obscure ancestry during removal times. DNA is shedding some light on it now though, 200+ years later.

September 20, 2013 at 3:51 am #37589I wish I knew more about my Smith ancestors. William Smith (went by Buck Smith sometimes) was born in Virginia 1797-8, and later lived in Kentucky. His son moved to Texas towards the end of his life.
Some of the Johns genetic relatives that I have live in Texas, but so far none in Indiana. I have other lines in Texas that could be related to the Johns family besides the Smiths. If I could do genetic genealogy full time I might be able to untangle this, but so far nothing.
I don’t know who all of the Smith ladies married or where they ended up. If I ever figure it out it could answer all sorts of genealogical questions.
Techteach, are your Sheltons related to your Johns? I do have Shelton ancestry.
September 20, 2013 at 3:51 am #37590If you have a GedMatch number I can run it against my Indiana Jones/Smith ancestors DNA.
There are two matches I’ve found between my mother, TechTeach’s mother, and my Smith cousin.
The Smith cousin does not share the Potter line that TechTeach and my mother also likely share.
There are four matching segments between our mothers, two also match my Smith cousin.
Of those matches one is chromosome 3 match shared by a dozen others with names Richardson, Miller, Williams, Dennen, Tritt, Jordan, Randall.
The other is on chromosome 13, other matches are Collins, Davidson, Lambeth, Mills, Nichols, Davenport, Hartman, Bolt.
No time to look for their genealogy, but there are a lot of present day descendants with likely Saponi names matching on these Smith DNA segments.
September 20, 2013 at 3:51 am #37591One genealogy I have looked up is a White DNA cousin who matches us (me, my sister, my mom, my uncle, my Smith cousin) on a big > 24cM strand of chromosome 13. He also mathces on a dozen or so smaller strands >3cM for a total around 65cM. He matches my smith cousin on 24cM segment of a 55cM match between my mother and Smith cousin. TechTeachs’s mother matches the 55cM segment but not the 24cM segment of our White cousin.
His Smith line is in Randolph IN same time as ours. His Miller line is in Pendleton WV same time as ours. We both have Germans changing names Mueller to Miller, he has Zerfass to Surface. He has Jewett ancestors in early Clinton OH same time as our Smiths/Goods. He has ancestors in Hawkins TN: Avis Bird, Halifax VA: Mary Bowman. Leffler is another common name.
