Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Does anyone know the correct pronunciation of Jomeokee? It is the Native name of Pilot Mountain and is from the siouan language stock. I think it is pronounced like joe–me-o–kee. Any response is welcomed…Thank you…Rebecca
I don’t know much other than that the stress is usually on the even numbered syllable, the opposite of English, though if a word we have is a corruption of the real word, the unstressed initial syllable tends to get clipped, throwing the emphasis off. My guess is it’s joMAYoKEE.
Where is Jomeokee? If its in Virginia, what county?
