Bill, I have been looking into the Grandy and Willis Etheridge line there is nothing to connect that I have found at this point except the naming pattern. They are from the Virginia Beach area then down into Camden County,NC which is just next to Currituck Cty. were we found many more Etheridge’s. This is on the coast of NC just east of Bertie County. THere is a place there called Indian Ridge were many Etheridge’s lived. All of these Etheridge’s connect back to the same family. Did you find anything out about this Soloman Etheridge?

There were also Etheridge’s in and around Indiantown which today is in Camden County which is were Willis lived. I have found Etheridge’s listed by the Shiloh Baptist Church in Shiloh near Indiantown. I found the will of Thomas Etheridge who was the brother of the first Grandy. The Grandy’s lived in the area too. On the Camden and Currituck County sites through genweb there are pictures of Etheridge’s take a look 😀 . The second Grandy being the son of my Nathan and brother to my Jordan cannot just be a coincidence. There are Jordan’s in the area too:)

I also found Hollowell’s in Princess Anne County Virginia just north of Camdem and Currituck Counties this is were all these Etheridge came from…interesting Grandy, Hollowell and Jordan are all surnames in that general area. Norfolk and Princess Ane counties are the orginal locations of all of this Etheridge clan. I’m not sure they moved or did the state line move around 1713-1714? Isn’t this the timeframe of the Tusacora War? 1711-1713? Apparently the Squires family moved to this area as well from Accomack County Virginia were they were listed as mixed bloods (something about some sort of accusations made) also some indians from Nantucket Island in Mass. moved this way on some whaling ships. I’m sure you know alot of the history of that area and my family seemed to have been wrapped up in that saga going on……it appears the people of Currituck and Camden counties readily admit to alot of intermarrying with the local indians….their photos tell the story so they can’t really deny it. From the location of all these surnames it is most likely my Nathan moved to Edgecombe County from this area when he did this he joined some of the other Etheridge’s who moved out of Norfolk County into Edgecombe, Nash and Halifax Counties and later Wilson County. There is apicture of Sabre Ann Etheridge Johnson on that website my gggrandmother Mary Susan resembles her. I think it might prove impossible to figure out which tribe since there were a dozen or so there. There are many Etheridge’s today (down here mostly) that claim Choctaw and Cherokee descent I believe as they continue to search for their roots they will find other bloodties to other tribes. From my studies into this family from colonial times to the present it would seem the intermarrying with natives started very early and continues to this day. I don’t know about these DNA test done but the history saids something different maybe they need to use another DNA company…but they may have just tested the Y male line which might well say white…..maybe they should do mtDNA’

September 28, 2005 at 2:28 am #17868Thanks Bill,
I found a nathan on the 1790 Currituck census with 3 young sons under 16 we know Jordan was born around 1793 and Grandy was born in the 1790’s since Nathan had 6 sons this might well be him…and the first Grandy was married to Mary Dauge…but I believe this Grandy and Nathan were brothers unless this Soloman pans out…although I can’t seem to find him yet.

September 28, 2005 at 2:28 am #24552Hey yall, I am new to your site. My name is Jason Etheridge, my lineage is as follows; Me, Ottis Lee, John William, William Aaron, Henry, Jordan, Nathan, Solomon Jr, Solomon Sr, Marmaduke, and Thomas the immigrant. I was wondering where yall think the native influence is? I know yall have been stuck on where Nathan came from, I am pretty sure I’m correct. The native theory intrigues me because I am born from blond haired and blue eyed people. I have native heritage on my mothers side but I don’t reaaly look it. I just never figured the possibility on the E side. Please respond or email me at eballz2000@yahoo.com. Jason Etheridge
September 28, 2005 at 2:28 am #26682Jason do you descend from Jordan 2nd wife Lucy Moseley?? I descend from is first wife and she is unknown but we know he had another by the census records. I also know Soloman and Marmaduke moved down the Robeson County and their desecendents are in Mississippi today and have native roots. I come from the Moore/Etheridge marriage my gggrandparents John W. Moore and Mary Susan Etheridge. John Wilson Moore’s mother was a Price and his grandmothers were Milly Robbins and Nancy Evans all from Edgecombe County North Carolina. John W. Moore moved into what became Wilson County this is where he married Mary Susan Etherige daughter of Thomas and Louvenia Etheridge. When we asked where to look for our indian ancestors we were told to look at the Etheridge and Moores. This is my maternal grandmothers family.
September 28, 2005 at 2:28 am #29801Mary Teakle/Reuben Ross/Josiah Peak
Mary Teackle married Reuben Ross ( a possible relative of Chief Ross) of Guilford, NC. I think her parents were originally from Prince Edward Co. Virginia. I have been told that she is full NA. How does she tie into Thomas Teackle Taylor? It is also my understanding that Teackle is a short name for a longer Indian name. Hash and Teackle were a few of the indian names that were shortened. This was told to me by Peake relatives. Josiah Peak(e) married Nancy Anna Ross. Nancy was Reuben and Mary Teackle (Ross’s) daughter.
September 28, 2005 at 2:28 am #29812Thomas Teackle Taylor was the son of William Taylor and Mary Teackle or Teagle he was born around 1734 in North Carolina. His parents were from Virginia. When was this Mary you speak of born?

I am researching the Josiah PEAK b. c. 1797 /Ann ROSS d/o Reuben ROSS/Mary TEACKLE family. Their children that I know are: Hugh m. Margery Hart, David C. m. Sarah Halsey, William m. 1. Mary Jane York 2. Hiley Adams, Celia m. Calvin Wiles, Nancy Jane m. James Sheets, Noah M. m. Celia Ingram, Rosamond T. m. Francis Jackson, Washington Troy m. Matilda Davis, Wilburn m. Cansada Davis, Polly m. James Patrick, Rebecca Jane m. John Mastin Reedy, Uriah m. Camelia Hart. Josiah had a brother, Samuel and two sisters, Juda and Pattie. This family lived in Grayson Co.,Va. but a lot of the children’s marriages took place in Ashe Co. Any help on this family will be appreciated. Will exchange info. Thank You. Rebecca Reedy Sisk Janiebecca@aol.
My response to the above question:
I am doing some tall extrapolation based on this historical account. Rebecca is knowledgable. Josiah was born in 1797 and married Nancy Anna Ross who was probably born in 1800. Therefore the average parent during this time was 17-20 years of age. Therefore, lets take an average and say 18 years old. This would make Mary Teackle b. in 1777 to 1779. Does this ring any bells by any chance? Thank you for your prompt reply. The Revolutionary War was already finished I think???

The last couple days I’ve been working on my Etheredge line….remember back when I told you all I had reason to believe Caleb Etheredge married Sally Thrower. Well in the last days I have learned her mother was Phoebe Malone….her grandmother was Mary Wynne…ggrandmother Mary Jones…gggrandmother Margarent Wood and ggggrandmother Ann Jeffries. Joshua Wynne the indian interpreter is in this lineage apparently in 1702 he was part of the group that went north to work the treaty with the Seneca he was shot and killed in 1715 by a Sappony indian in retaliation of the killing of a great man in the tribe. One of Joshua servants apparently killed the Sappony and he was killed to even the score….one great man for one great man is what the Saponny told the court and no one was convicted of his death. From this lineage it appears there is considerable NA in this line…whether it is Saponi or Nottoway is questionable. I welcome any thoughts or comments you many have about what I have learned. BTW when Joshua went north in 1702 he went with the Nottoway and Meherrin.

Hey Linda, You mentioned above, Mary Jones, Margaret Wood, and Ann Jeffries. All these are direct ancestors of mine through my Mama’s side of the Jones family. If I’m correct, I believe that Mary “Batte” Jones was the wife of Peter Jones Jr of Prince George and Henrico Co, VA, Margaret Wood was the wife of Peter Jones Sr. of Prince George, VA and Anne Jeffries was the wife of Richard Jones of Prince George, VA. Margaret Wood’s father, Abraham Wood and my ancestor Peter Jones were indian Traders. My side of the Jones family migrated down from VA to Halifax Co, NC and then down to GA. Thanks, Gavin
September 28, 2005 at 2:28 am #29914Sapponi Indian/Court Trial of Sorts:
Thank you Whitehawk for the information on the Sapponi indian tribe and court system that they used during this time era!! That was very true one life for another. I enjoyed reading what Questforfacts explained about the Sapponi as well.
September 28, 2005 at 2:28 am #36198My ggg grandmother was Mary Tanner and she was married to Leander Gross in Rutherford, NC. I wonder if she’s related to the other Tanners mentioned here. I’ll keep digging.
