I was just wondering if anyone was looking at this surname and had come across a source for it in Va. In my family, the Kennetts, Canadys/Cannadays, and Ferguson/Furgersons owned land near each other and intermarried and shared names.
December 4, 2010 at 4:48 am #35607I guess you’ve used our search feature to see if it’s come up before. I know I’ve seen the Canadays around now and then. Have you searched on that, and your location? Could Kennett be a variant of Kennedy/Cannady? I know Pamunkey Cannadys.
December 4, 2010 at 4:48 am #35608Maybe, I’m not sure. I have seen some people in Guilford NC Qualla area that have a surname Canet and one seems to have changed his name to Kennett/Kennet/Kenitt/Kinett/Kennette when I was doing searches. the Kennetts in my family as far as I can figure show up in Franklin/Bedford/Patrick co. area near the Cannadys and Fergusons, but seemed to

My great grandfather was a Kinnett. Tracing it back it goes to Kennett and they were from England. My Kennet/Kinet/Kinnett were in Bedford County VA before going to Wayne and Russell counties Ky.

Are you related to the William Lewis Kinnett of KY branch? I am a descendent of a William Lewis Kennett of Gallipolis, Ohio who was a steamboat man. He was born around the same time as William Lewis of KY and wondered if the families knew each other, at one point I thought they were the same person but that is not so, and also the Kinnetts of Brown Co., Ohio because I think I may have some pix of the Brown Co. Kinnett relatives. I heard the Lewis was for Meriweather Lewis. My Kinnetts/Kennetts –they used to spell it Kinnett–were from Zachariah Kinnett, who lived in Franklin Co, though I think it was Bedford at one time.
My great grandmother Kennett looks quite different from the Kennetts/Kinnetts I have seen pictures of.

My Kinnett line comes from John Kennett Sr. born ca 1735-1745 Maryland d. abt 1803 Bedford Co VA married to Catherine Payne, their son John Kennett Jr. married to Unity Blankenship. From them their son Thomas Kinnit married to Nancy Pratt and from tem to y grandmother it was spelled Kinnett. I found where it is thought that John Kennett Sr. might be the son Valentine Kennett. But I do not know. I do know they go back to England.
Do you live in Ohio?

I used to live in Ohio, not now though the family has lived in Ohio, working on river boats. Hey I have alot of that family tree, I know there has been some recent changes and progress in the early part of the tree. Yes mine are said to probably come through John Kennett as well. There is good progress here: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kennett-35 and Pat Dobson helped me alot. There are some assumptions in the early stuff.
My Kennetts married some Fergusons and Cannaday/Cannadys, the Zachariah Kennett I descend from seems to maybe be the son of an elder Zachariah that was married to Sarah Frances “Frankey” Pollard. There were no birth certs back then and the census doesn’t show much, just numbers of different types of members. Wills and deeds are better.
My great great grandfather ran a tugboat on Lake Erie for a time. They moved from Gallipolis to Pittsburgh, working on the Ohio River I guess, and then up to Cleveland near Lake Erie. I think it was due to boat work. Kentucky is not far from those places.
Your branch has Luther Kinnett right, who went to Missouri, and Ferdinand. I have some pix if you want to see my part of the family, I can pm them to you. I have some people I don’t know who they are, they are all labelled “Mother and Daddy…”

Looks like we are distant cousins!
I went to the page and I didn’t fin any new information. Most of what I have is from the research and book that Don Kennett did.
The names Luther and Ferdinand do not sound familiar, they are not in my direct line.
I would love to see the pix… yes pm me.
