Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Don’t know if this has been posted before. Tax lists for 1782-1832 King William County. This is where the Pamunkeys were living and seems to have both reservation and off reservation names:

MANY familiar surnames, including Collins, Holt (in Indian Town and later listed as Indian), Walden, Sweat, Winn, Carter, Bell, Williams (listed as Indian), Edwards (listed as Indian), Quarles, Anderson, Cooke, Johnson, Walker…also Kemp, Langston, Mush, Miles, Spurlock, Dungee, etc.
Might just be a coincidence, but finding Collins and Holt together here is something I will sure try to look at more closely.
Thanks! I think this was posted here before, but I’m glad to see it again. I have Pamunkey on my Dad’s side. We also have a whole lot of the COOKE and some KEMP surnames on my Momma’s side, but I don’t have ndn traced on her side yet. I need to get steppin’ on her side…
